I had a "lightbulb moment" recently in which I realized why Chris Kimball, of Cook's Illustrated magazine and America's Test Kitchen, looks so familiar. It's because he is the nameless main character in Green Eggs and Ham.

OK, probably I am the only person on the planet to whom this means anything, but lemme tell ya, it was a revelation.

I'd say the irrational and deeply-held food prejudices he displayed in that book ought to have disqualified him from being the editor of a cooking magazine.

(Although, to judge from his columns, he doesn't do much editing, just wanders around East Bumblesnort, VT pretending he's Garrison Keillor.)

No, no. Don't you see? It's a glorious, quasi-Dickensian epic tale of tribulation and redemption! The book recounts the awakening process he had to go through in order to become the renowned foodie he is today. The fox and the box represent modern American provincialism, while the goat and the boat represent the increasingly pervasive influence of foreign cuisine.
