Days that are crazed
Jun. 1st, 2015 04:36 pmIn my previous post I wrote about the logistics of last Thursday. It turned out fine, of course. I ended up going with the option that was less logistically complicated but that involved me not seeing the kids for almost a full 24 hours. The babysitter picked them up after school, and since it was a ridiculously hot day, they basically just hung around our house eating italian ice and playing on electronic devices. Which is pretty much what we would have done if I'd been home, except probably with ice cream. Meanwhile, I went to the chorus dress rehearsal, which was also fine.
I also said in my previous post that you shouldn't get me started on Saturday, so now of course I have to post about Saturday. ;) It was pretty ridiculous.
It all started with getting Isaac and me up and out to the baseball field by 8:30am. Now, that's half an hour later than we leave the house on a regular school morning, but you know, 8:30 on a Saturday is earlier than 8:00 on a weekday, psychologically. Shut up, it is. Plus I hadn't slept well the night before, so I was pretty zonked.
Isaac's team was on t-ball duty (each team at the older level has to take one week of helping out with the little kids at t-ball) so he had to be there at 8:45am, wearing his team uniform. (cue lengthy debate between me and Isaac on which shoes he should wear, and which pants, and whether it was necessary for me to wash his uniform socks twice between Friday night's game, Sat morning's t-ball, and Sat evening's game...) So we left the house at 8:30, leaving Ruthie home alone for the amount of time it took me to drive Isaac to the field and then come back home. I thought I would go back to bed, but by the time I got back I was too awake for that, so I sat around blearily staring at my computer until Isaac returned. He had walked himself back from the field, which was fine except that it was quite hot and he had no water bottle, so he was all sweaty and dehydrated. He drank several cups of water and collapsed on the couch with his computer to play Minecraft.
We basically vegged out for the next few hours, and I even ended up taking a bit of a nap. I set my iPad's timer for 45 minutes, and when it went off I set it for another 10 minutes, and then I kept resetting it for 10 more minutes at a time, which doesn't make for a very restful nap I guess, and which also resulted, of course, in me getting up a lot later than I had planned. So then there was a mad dash to get everything together for our evening.
And what "everything" was it that we needed to get together? Well, for Isaac it was all of his baseball stuff: uniform shirt, pants, socks, hat, cleats, jockstrap, batting gloves, and catching glove. Plus a water bottle this time and some cash for snacks. For Ruthie, we packed a backpack with pajamas, a change of clothes, toothbrush, etc. for her sleepover with cousin Baz. And for me it was my chorus concert stuff: my music folder, water bottle, snacks, and my concert clothes -- we're supposed to wear a long-sleeved black shirt and black pants (or a long black skirt) and black socks/stockings and black shoes. I packed a whole assortment of extra black clothes, because I didn't want to put any of it on yet because the day was so hot and I would be sweating a lot before concert time.
So, having packed up all of that, we headed out around 3pm to pick up a birthday present for cousin Baz, plus a couple of other random errands, and then we hit the road to Framingham (where Baz lives, along with
sandykidd and
metafrantic). They had kindly agreed to have Ruthie sleep over so that I wouldn't have to worry about her during the concert (our babysitter being unavailable that night). It takes 40ish minutes to get to Framingham, so by the time we got there and dropped Ruthie off, I was starting to get seriously nervous about timing. We said a quick goodbye, Isaac did a quick-change into his baseball pants and socks, then we hit the road back to Somerville again. Isaac put on his cleats and uniform shirt in the car.
We zoomed straight to the baseball field, he hopped out, and then I zoomed off to the concert location with about ten minutes to spare. Well, it takes longer than that to drive from Conway Park to MIT, find a parking place, park, and walk to the concert hall...so I was a little late, but no harm done. I quickly changed into my concert pants in the car, and when I got to the concert hall, all sweaty from all that ridiculous rushing around in the heat, I put on my "not as good" long-sleeved black shirt for the interim.
The thing is, normally I don't put on my concert clothes until the last minute. We're usually called to be at the hall several hours before the concert starts, so we'll rehearse for a while, and then we get a break of usually around 20-30 minutes before go time. That's when I usually go to the bathroom and put on my concert shirt, to minimize the amount of time I spend sweating in it. But on this occasion we were specifically told to be in concert clothes when we arrived for the pre-concert rehearsal, because there was a professional photographer taking pictures. So I had planned ahead, and boy was I glad I did. It worked out pretty well. I did the pre-concert rehearsal in my "not as good" shirt, and when we were done rehearsing I went to the bathroom and changed into a black tank top / cami, which helped me cool down even more, and then before we went onstage for the actual concert I put on a black cardigan over the cami and all was well.
So we performed the concert, which went well, and meanwhile Isaac was playing his baseball game and Ruthie was hanging out with Baz. That part went fine. After the game, Isaac apparently hung around at the field for quite some time, playing with a couple of other kids from his team. Then the coach drove him home. When we made this plan, I thought it would involve Isaac spending some significant amount of time home alone (the game should have ended around 8pm and our concert went until 9:30) but apparently the game went long, and they spent so much time playing at the field that he actually got home just after 10pm! And I got home around 10:15, so he was barely alone at all. So that part was fine.
It could have been nice for me and Isaac to have a few minutes of together-time without Ruthie, except that we were both completely exhausted by that point. So we just flopped on the couch and watched a few innings of the women's college softball World Series, and then went to bed. Except that because of my weird afternoon nap and the extra caffeine I had imbibed to keep myself functional for the day, I was up half the night. Uggghhhh.
Sunday morning we were able to be lazy at least for a couple of hours, and then we headed out with grandma to get to Baz's birthday party, and retrieve Ruthie. So that was fun, and a much less complicated day. Phew. ;)
But seriously, that was WAY too much busy-ness for one day. I am still worn out from it two days later! This time of year is just always like that, it seems. I kinda can't wait until July.
