I haven't had much time for creative (i.e., not completely boring) cooking lately. :( But I do have a few things to add to my list of new recipes for 2008.

#43 was corn chowder with fresh farm-share corn that I had steamed. I did a sort of amalgam of two different recipes, one from online and one from a cookbook. I started by cutting the kernels off the cobs and then boiling the cobs in some water to make a nice corny broth. Then I sauteed some onions and added the broth and s&p and a little bit of milk (most recipes call for heavy cream but uh, no). I also put in a bit of flour to thicken it, and at the end, added the corn kernels and a little thyme. I was going to include potatoes, too, but it turned out the ones I had were rotten so I left them out. Anyway, it came out REALLY well. I definitely think that the corny broth from cooking the cobs is the secret. Other times I've tried corn chowder, it came out tasting like warm milk with corn kernels in, but this really tasted like a corn soup. Yummy!

#44 was curried tortellini, a variation on a recipe I had made before, but this time I used plain yogurt instead of the coconut milk that the original recipe called for. It was an experiment, since the coconut milk is so fatty. It was okay. The yogurt curdled a bit, which took me by surprise, but that was okay. But it still didn't have enough curry flavor, and the tortellini (boxed) were too dry. ah well.

#45 was granola bars, from a recipe that someone posted on a parenting list. They are certainly kid-friendly, and quite easy to make. You mix up oats, flour, wheat germ, flax seeds, honey, brown sugar, oil, and an egg, press it all into a greased pan, and bake. I also tossed in a few chocolate chips. They came out nice and chewy and very tasty. As I said in my twitter, it's hard to see how these differ from oatmeal cookies -- the distinction might be clearer if I had put in maybe nuts, or dried cranberries, or something like that. But in any case, I feel confident that they're still reasonably nutritious; a bit sugary maybe, but certainly high in fiber and protein. Isaac loves them and has been having them in his lunchbox each day.

I think there was more, but that's all I can remember at the moment.

There's a farmer's market on Thursdays in Kendall Square, steps away from our new office, but it only goes till 2pm and so far I haven't managed to remember it in time yet. Today I remembered at 1:50. Sigh. I think I'm going to put it in my Outlook calendar for next week!
