yesterday's eventful commute
Jun. 25th, 2008 11:44 amAlso, last night we had a monsoon or something. I dunno. Ruthie and I were on the bus and it had just started out from Davis when I saw a big, dramatic bolt of lightning not far off. Then there was the clap of thunder, which didn't sound too loud to me because we were sitting right above the bus's engine, but I saw other people on the bus jump and look around.
Then the bus turned onto Highland Ave and the deluge began! It seriously went from zero to major downpour in like half a second. Lashing rain, wild wind, branches being torn off trees, lightning and thunder every few seconds. I (and everyone else) was looking out the bus window thinking, oh crap, and it's almost my stop! And of course I hadn't brought an umbrella.
So we got to our stop and got off the bus and a bunch of us -- maybe 10 people in all -- immediately zipped under the awning of a restaurant next to the bus stop, to regroup and figure out what to do. And it was chilly! It had been like 80, so we were in tank tops, and now it was like 55-60. So we were all standing there in the wind and rain, and sort of as one we all looked over at the Dunkin' Donuts two doors away, and we all had the same collective thought. So we all dashed into the DD to be warm and dry. The one lady working there got a little grumpy at the amount of water we brought in to puddle on her floor, but after she mopped it up, she and the other lady didn't seem to care that we were all just standing around looking out the window.
We hung out there for a while, maybe 5-10 minutes. I was feeling very grateful that my mom had picked up Isaac from preschool so I didn't have to worry about him. I just needed to get myself and Ruthie to our car -- parked only about 2-3 blocks away from the Dunkin' Donuts, but with the rain and thunder and lightning, that could be a LONG two blocks!
So I waited and watched for the rain to slow down a bit. A few of the other people who had come in with me from the bus left -- one lived right across the street and called her husband to come over with an umbrella, lol. Finally I asked the Dunkin' Donuts lady for a plastic bag, and they gave me a nice big sturdy one, which I tore a hole in and made it a poncho to cover Ruthie. Then I made a mad dash for the car. We got pretty darn wet ;) but we made it.
And then we got home to find a similarly damp Isaac, grandma, and Baz! :)
And yet, it all cleared up in time for
metafrantic and
sandykidd to see a great Sox game! woohoo.
lol, weather is wacky.
