So this coming Friday is the deadline to register Isaac for preschool if I want to enter the lottery for one of the two programs that do admissions by special lottery. And I do want to. So I need to get our stuff in by Friday, which of course I have known about for months and have been saying "I have plenty of time." Except, now, not so much any more.
So last night I decided it would be a good idea to gather all my paperwork together and make sure I had it all, and put it in my work bag, so that on any particular day this week I could hypothetically decide to leave work early or come in late so as to go by the Parent Info Center and put in my application. So I set about digging up the necessary papers.
I found Isaac's birth certificate no problem, ditto his medical forms. A utility bill, no problem. A copy of a mortgage statement, I didn't have because I pay it all online, but I figured I could go online and print something out that ought to qualify.
Then I went to look at the checklist of documents you need, just to be sure -- and uh-oh. It says you need a copy of your deed (if you own your home) in addition to proof of last mortgage payment. (Unlike
ww1614 I have no qualms about proving my residency in order to sign up for public school....)
I go online, check the school dept website and find a FAQ that says "What if I don't have a copy of my deed?" and the answer is "check with your mortgage company or the Registry of Deeds."
Well, it's 10pm on a Sunday night so I don't figure I'm going to have much luck calling the mortgage company, although I did shoot them an email. Then I did a quick google to find the website of the Registry of Deeds. SCORE! They have all their records online! A few keystrokes and clicks later, I'm looking at a scan of the actual deed documents. Awesome. I can just print it out, and we're good to go.
Except, not. Because my brand-new laser printer that I just bought two months ago suddenly decides it doesn't want to feed the paper in straight. It jams, over and over again. Three or four mangled pieces of paper later, I decide to give up for the night, because I'm nervous about the printer noise disturbing the sleeping kids. (Not that it's a very loud printer, but you never know.) I've googled a bit and found only a bunch of pages saying "I love this printer, it never jams!" and one rather unhelpful HP support page saying that if the paper won't feed right, it could be because the rollers are dirty. Yeah? And? How do you clean them?? ugh!!
So I cancel the print job and go off to brush my teeth, thinking gloomy thoughts about whether the printer is still under warranty and where the receipt is and when the hell am I going to find time to take it back to the store. But suddenly it occurs to me ... the possibility of Ruthie having inserted some foreign object into the printer is most definitely, as we say in the techie world, non-zero.
So I go back into my room and get a flashlight and look. Sure enough!! A little foam puzzle-piece thingie is clearly resting atop the rollers. I have to open up the printer, remove the toner cartridge, and pry the thing out. I put everything back, and voila! I'm printing again! yay!
note to self: keep printer covered when not in use, to thwart toddler saboteurs. (saboteuses?)
Whew. So at last I have everything that I need to go and register us for kindergarten. Now I just have to find the time to do it. This week should be a lot less crazy work-wise than last week was, so it shouldn't be too hard to find a spare half-hour or so.
In other procrastinatory news, remember how this accountant lady my mom knows had agreed to do my tax return for me, even though supposedly she wasn't taking new clients this year? Yeah, well, I procrastinated for so long on filling out the paperwork for her, that now it's too late and she can't do it. :( FAIL. I suck. So I shall be muddling through the tax return on my own, unfortunately. I have no one to blame but myself.
On the cheerier side, I figured out why my spell-checker wasn't working on my work computer after upgrading to Office 2007!! The IT guy here had wrestled with it and was stumped, but I did some googling and found a page that suggested deleting a particular registry key, and I tried it, and it worked! Go me! ;)
