There's cruelty to animals, and then there's this.

The link above is disturbing and depressing! Don't click if you don't think you can handle it. Especially if you're a cat lover.

I'd say "people suck," but the creatures that did this don't count as people. I hereby banish them from the homo sapiens genus and species.

There isn't an lj mood icon for how much this upsets me.

[near tears] The only thing that ever makes hearing about this kind of thing halfway bearable is the thought that it must be a random, rare sort of psychopath--but to find out that a dozen people in the same apartment complex thought this was *funny?!*

Humanity sucks. I'm going to go play with my inner misanthrope for a while.

I will say that the woman who attempted to rescue the poor thing was exceedingly brave, because God knows what they might have decided it was "funny" to do to her.

The odd thing, though, is that a lot of people seem to think it's okay to do things to animals that they would never dream of doing to, for example, human children. You see that kind of thing all the time on Animal Planet's "Animal Precinct" show (which I had to stop watching for exactly this reason). It's like they have some kind of weird mental block where cats or dogs are just "things" so it doesn't matter what you do to them.

But still, yeah, it was brave of her to come to the rescue, burning her hand and all. I bet she has nightmares. :(

It's got to be at least partly because pets are regarded legally as property the same way an armchair is property--which is why I give kudos to whatever California city it was that just recently changed its animal cruelty ordinance language from "pet owner" to "pet guardian." Semantics, I know, but sometimes when combined with more severe punishment semantics can begin to make a difference in the long term.

When I told hubby (http://pistorius.livejournal.com/) about this, he suggested branding the guy: "I burn kittens, how about you?" I thought that was a fine idea.

If they don't put him in prison, I hope they fine him dry. Maybe he'll feel *that*.I
