Mind you, I love the fact that my town has an automated phone system that they use to notify you of things like snow emergencies, upcoming road closures, and so forth.

But tonight I got a robo-call informing me that as part of the big road-work project that has been ongoing for months now, N-Star (electric company) will be shutting off power "in [my] area" starting at 1am tonight/tomorrow and expected to end around 6am. And by the way, the robo-call adds, this will mean that all electricity to my home will be off -- including heating.

Yikes. Well, I would really have preferred a bit more than a few hours' notice!! It's not supposed to be all that cold tonight (did they wait for a night that was supposed to be less cold? what would they have done if it was scheduled and then the forecast was below freezing?) but still. I'm thinking I'll crank the heat up nice and high for the next couple hours until we go to bed, and cross my fingers. I hate being cold.

The other issue is the loss of all our clocks (okay, except the one in the kitchen that runs on a battery) and potential not knowing when it's time to get up, especially if the "expected" end of this outage ends up being a little later than "expected." You know that these things happen, after all. They say six, and then next thing you know you're waking up, it's past eight and you still have no power. Urgh.

Anyway, I set the alarm on my cell phone, as a backup plan. And I'm sure we'll survive. I'm just disgruntled from the lack of advance notice. :P (Oh and by the way, the robo-lady adds, they'll be doing this all over again on Feb 19th! Lovely.)

grump.

I'd never heard of that service, but I can foresee that it may be useful in future. Thank you!

Oh yes, we got that call a couple weeks ago. I think we lost power once, for about 10 seconds. (Not that that guarantees you won't be down all night, of course.)
