arrrgggghhhh, I am so annoyed. The four copies of my house key that I got yesterday, to prevent Wednesday night's disaster from ever happening again ... don't work. Not one of the four of them will open or lock the door. ARGH. This means I'm going to have to go BACK to the hardware store, try to berate them into fixing it, and then fret all day about whether the new keys that they (hypothetically) give me will actually work. Did I mention ARGH?

In kindergarten-decision news, the open houses are next week. I have narrowed it down to three schools based on a combination of a) proximity to home, b) one program that I keep hearing people rave about (particularly [livejournal.com profile] wneleh), and c) randomness...I mean there are a couple of other schools that are probably similarly close "as the crow flies," but I ruled them out simply because I had to rule something out! I had to narrow it down somewhat at least. I can always visit those schools later if I don't love any of the top three.

Anyway, so I called around and one of the three (which is where I go to vote, and that's about all I know about it) wanted you to make an appointment for open-house day, because it's a small school and they need to have some crowd control. So I signed up for the 9:30 tour on Thursday. The second school I called, which is geographically closest to us and thus I believe we're guaranteed a slot, is bigger so they said I could just drop in any time. And the third one, the one [livejournal.com profile] wneleh recommends which is literally a stone's throw from [livejournal.com profile] sandykidd and [livejournal.com profile] metafrantic's house, had already circulated emails saying that you could come any time.

So I think I'll try to do all three on Thursday, but if I do two and then my brain feels too full, I can quit (I can quit any time!) and go back to the last one on Friday. Whew.

Meanwhile I'm contemplating how Isaac is going to deal with the fact that he'll be losing his special Wednesdays-with-grandma once he starts "big kid school." I mentioned it to him briefly the other day, but he was pretty much like "but that won't be until I'm five!" which of course to him is a million years in the future, so it didn't upset him too much yet. heh.

Isaac is definitely learning a bit of actual Spanish from watching "Dora the Explorer." The other night he closed the bathroom door while I was in there, and then told me that if I wanted it to open, I would have to say "abierto!"

In Ruthie news, she is definitely a toddler. ;) She is getting so bossy! The latest is when she has something in her hand that she doesn't want, she'll thrust it at me while demanding "This away!" And if she asks for something, e.g. milk, and I offer an alternative, e.g. water, she'll go "ummm..." in a tone as if she might actually be considering it...for about two seconds before reiterating "MILK!" LOL. On the other hand, she says "please" without prompting, way more frequently than Isaac does...!

Which schools are you looking at? Or are you trying to leave the names out on purpose?

No, I just left them out because I figured they wouldn't mean anything to most readers. They are the Brown, the Winter Hill, and the Healey/"Choice".

It sounds like a good plan with the schools. What's the before school/after school situation? Could Isaac have a special after school day with Grandma?

Afterschool options are something I do have to look into -- I know the city provides it, it costs some unknown amount of money and I don't really know any more details (except that apparently you can send your kid to afterschool at any school, not just the one he attends). Definitely the idea of my mom picking him up after school on Wednesdays and having special time with him then is under consideration, but it still won't be the same as having an entire day with her. (Isaac said, "when I am in big kid school I want to go to grandma's house on the weekend every day!")
