inexplicable friends
Jul. 9th, 2002 04:25 pmIn other news, I forgot to relate this somewhat odd thing that happened a week or two ago. I'm still scratching my head over it.
I was talking to a friend, whom I'll call Bill to disguise his true identity. I should add that I've known Bill for about 3.5 years, but mostly as the boyfriend / fiance / husband of one of my good female friends -- didn't start truly getting to know him until the past year or so. Mike, on the other hand (another male friend whose real name I'm concealing), is someone I've known for almost ten years at this point, and we've done a lot of road trips together, gone to games, shared sleeping arrangements, all kinds of deep friend-bonding type stuff.
Anyway, so I'm talking to Bill, and he says, "Remember that time at the party when you were telling me that you mostly liked girls but would be willing to consider dating/sleeping with a guy too?" And I allowed as how I didn't recall that specific conversation, but the statement itself was valid and true. So he says, "well, not long after that I was talking to Mike, and he said, 'nah, that's wrong, Joan's a lesbian. She's not interested in men at all.'"
I really was, and am, boggled by this. Mike is supposed to be one of my closest friends and one of the people who know me best in the world. And he doesn't even realize that I'm bi?! What the hell? Is this Bizarro World? It's not that I'm angry, I'm just bemused and taken aback.
I haven't had a chance to talk to Mike since then, but probably I'll bring it up at some point. It's just weird. *shakes head*
