bruised and battered
May. 24th, 2007 10:39 amWell, it's morning and my shoulders are killing me and I've discovered quite a few blisters on my hands. But hey, the lawn is mowed!
I woke up around 1:30am or so to discover that Ruthie was soaking wet. I had to get up and grope around in the dark for a clean diaper and change of clothes for her, then wrestle them onto her while she fussed. That was entertaining! And also odd. She hasn't needed changing in the middle of the night for ages. I think she's been taking tips from Bastian. ;)
Several of you asked what kind of computer requirements I have, so here's the basic story: I basically just want to replace my current machine before it dies, rather than waiting for it to crap out on me and leave me trembling in withdrawal. ;)
I want a desktop, probably a Windoze machine (although I keep waffling on whether I want to dive back into Macworld...but I don't really want to spend as much as that would cost, anyway).
Also the following:
* I don't want to be a beta tester for Microsoft (i.e.: no Vista)
* I must have cd-burning capabilities
* I don't need or want fancy graphics capabilities
* I need a bigger hard drive than my current 40GB
Basically,
retch wrote that $500 will get you a machine that would be overkill for websurfing and text editing and that's exactly what I want. I want to spend $400-500 and get a machine that will be slightly overkill for my needs. ;) I mean, essentially all I do with my computer is surf the web, create/edit MS Word documents, and play with kid pix/videos.
So, any suggestions/recommendations that you have would be welcome, but right now I'm leaning toward something like this, which I can get a bit of a discount on via my mom's place of employment. The only thing it apparently doesn't have is FireWire (which I need for the video camera) but I already have the FireWire card that I bought for my current computer, so I can just swap it out.
And then, in my copious free time I can install linux on my current/old computer! whee! :)

Date: 2007-05-24 09:01 pm (UTC)You might be able to buy a nice desktop for less than $500. I was able to build one for my mother by buying the bits at the computer market and assembling it myself. Take Isaac down to the market one Saturday and check it out.
You really want a DVD burner, not a CD burner. Trust me on this one. The one in your link is a CD burner but only a DVD reader.

1gb RAM
250gb HD
Lightscribe dvd/cd burner
dvd rom
13 in 1 memory card reader, firewire port and 3 front plate usb drives
and other stuff I cant remember for about $500 in October. The only sucky thing is now with Vista being out I don't think many (if any) of their computers are coming with XP :(
