good stuff
Mar. 18th, 2007 10:43 amWell, the rest of my birthday and my day-after-birthday were good, in weird unique sorts of ways :)
It was nice to have some time at home by myself, even though I kept thinking about how much money it represented (at the amount I'm making per hour, a few hours "off" can add up :( ). And then in the driving snow and biting wind, I did indeed take the bus to Cori's house to pick up the kids! Most people will probably think I am nuts, but it was awesome! It was so much better than driving it -- I haaaaaaaate driving in snow. And this was the worst kind: falling very heavily, but wet, so that the streets were all slushy. And I'm always moaning about the fact that I live in a major metropolitan area with a really good public transit system yet I always drive everywhere.
So I checked the schedules and the bus runs every 20 minutes, so I figured, even with lousy weather, the most I'd probably have to wait would be half an hour. So I just bundled myself up and prepared myself mentally for a lengthy wait in the cold and wet. (of course, the fact that I wasn't bound to any particular pickup time with Cori made this all possible.) But the bus actually came within moments of my arrival at the bus stop. A nice warm ride to Cori's, then a fairly daunting three-block walk with the kids (one heavy baby, and one preschooler who hates anything wet touching his face, heh) and then we were at the station. And there was a bus! Now technically the bus is supposed to drive around to the other side and passengers have to walk around and get in on the other side. It's not a long extra walk, really...except when it's snowing heavily and you have two small children. So I asked the bus driver if we could get on, and he let us. Yay.
Then a nice warm ride, another 3-block walk, and we were home! Awesome. :)
Then Saturday came and we basically just hung around at home because there was still a lot of snow out there and we didn't want to deal. And I surprised myself by actually making a fair amount of progress on cleaning up the kitchen! It's not done by a long stretch, but I did reclaim a significant portion of counter, which makes me very happy. And then Isaac helped me clean up the living room too, and I even managed to sweep, which was badly needed (hardwood floors show every speck of dust, you know).
In the afternoon, when I was cleaning and Isaac and Ruthie were playing by themselves -- Isaac can do who-knows-what in the living room for ages, just singing/talking quietly to himself -- all of a sudden he came into the kitchen and told me that he was making me a cake and it was going to have my name on it. :) He drew me a birthday cake, all of his own initiative, and wrote my name on it. I had to help him with the J. :) ♥
Oh, but we didn't get a nap yesterday, alas. We lay down, and then the phone rang twice. *sigh* One was a woman from freecycle calling to arrange a pickup time for some baby clothes I had offered her. The second was my uncle, calling from California to ask me to recite the words that Shatner says over the Star Trek opener ("Space, the final frontier..." etc.). In my groggy haze, having just barely fallen asleep moments before he called, I was still able to recite it verbatim, mostly -- although later I realized I had forgotten "To explore strange new worlds." I'll have to email him.
Anyway, so my talking to him woke up both kids, after less than an hour of lying down (and even less than that of actual sleep). Siiiiigh. But we still managed to make it through the rest of the day with little pain. ;)
And now it's today and we're really going to have to go out, otherwise I might go insane. ;) Also we need some groceries.
Oh! And in the past couple of days Ruthie has shown actual comprehension of words! Obeying verbal commands and such! I'm so excited. But that's another post.
