things come to pass
Sep. 20th, 2006 04:32 pmUpdates from my post of the other day.
Great-Aunt Ruth died this morning around 11.
Bini the cat has diabetes.
Neither child has napped and I have a caffeine-withdrawal headache. Today has not been a good day.

Date: 2006-09-21 01:38 am (UTC)I'm sorry for your loss. My last living grandmother died right before Emmy was born, so I know what it's like to have someone in your life who your child will never get to meet.
Hopefully things will be better tomorrow (at least on the nap front).
*hugs*

Date: 2006-09-21 02:09 am (UTC)I don't have anything useful to say about your Great-Aunt Ruth, so I'm going to talk about feline diabetes instead.
If you have a choice of pills or shots for Bini, go with the shots. Persephone fought pills like a little tigress but didn't mind shots at all. She purred when I gave her shots. If I recall correctly, the shots were cheaper, too.
Persephone did fine on the cheap "dog" insulin (Vetsulin), too. My coworker R heard that cats absolutely, positively have to have the more expensive PZI insulin, but blood tests proved Persephone was fine on Vetsulin. It really depends on the cat.
Also, get your vet to write a prescription for the needles and fill it at the pharmacy. They were $17 for 100 at the pharmacy and really expensive at the vet. You'll need this chart for conversion if you use human needles with pet insulin, because human insulin is 100U (100 units per mL) and pet insulin is 40U.
You also need a Bini Crash Kit--some clear corn syrup or something, it's maybe a buck or two a bottle, for if his blood sugar crashes.
Persephone refused her Hill's Prescription Diet W/D. I read the labels on the food at Petsmart looking for food with extra fiber. "Hairball remedy" formulas frequently fit that description.
All of this probably sounds grim and overwhelming, but I didn't mind giving Persephone two shots a day at all. In fact, I wish I was still giving her two shots a day. :(
Good luck, and I hope things get better soon.
