If I were to go to a movie next week while I'm between jobs, what movie would you recommend? I have nooooooo clue what's out these days. And I haven't seen a movie in the theater since the last "Lord of the Rings" movie.

Please don't recommend "An Inconvenient Truth" -- I can't handle anything heavy right now. And don't tell me about "Pirates of the Carribean 2." I know it's one of the options. I want to know what the other options are....

Well, Superman and X-Men3 are out, if you're looking for superhero-class action. X-Men3 wasn't so hot, and Superman's not bad.

If you're into animated fare, Cars is the latest from Pixar, and folks say it's pretty good Pixar material. They usually don't disappoint. Myself, I liked Over The Hedge, but that might no longer be out.

Yeah, Pirates.

A Scanner Darkly opened just Friday, I believe. Interesting sci-fi classic, done with rotoscoping animation and Keanu Reaves. Looks interesting, but I haven't seen it yet.

Alas, Snakes On A Plane is not yet out. More's the pity.

Cars was very fun, in the way that kids' movies with some adult appeal can be, but I don't know that I'd see it if I weren't taking a kid.

X3 was very disappointing for a variety of reasons, but it kept my interest.

I think the new Superman movie is very good in general. It's totally unrealistic on what preschoolers are like (a major character is four years old) so if that kind of thing would turn you off a movie, don't go. If you can roll your eyes and set that aside, it's a very good reimagining of the characters, I think.

Those and POTC2 are what I've seen lately.

Is Kinky Boots in theatres down there? It's a British film, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor (from Serenity) as a drag queen who helps a man save the family shoe factory. Haven't seen it yet (waiting for video) but I've heard great things about it.

I missed Kinky Boots when it was here and am bugging [livejournal.com profile] whumpdotcom to add it to his GreenCine queue.

I saw A Scanner Darkly last weekend, and liked it a lot.

Cars you can do on video with the kids (we saw it over the weekend, just Cary and I, and it was cute and all, but if I hadn't seen a movie since 2003, it would not have been my first choice).

Superman Returns was excellent, and a must see on the big screen if you have any interest at all in the franchise. Essentially a sequal to Superman II (as in, Sups III and IV never happened in Bryan Singer's universe).

Clerks II opens on Friday and we're seeing it this weekend. But if you didn't see the first one, then don't bother with the sequel as I expect it to be pretty heavy with injokes from the first (and other Kevin Smith/Silent Bob movies). And oh yeah..."he who shall not be named" *might* have a cameo in it, as he does in most other Kevin Smith films. ;-)

Good luck choosing!

I liked A Prairie Home COmpanion (charming, musical) and Thank You for Smoking (more satirical than deep). I have no interest in Superman, Cars, DaVinci Code, etc. Pirates, maybe.

Prairie Home Companion?

Still trying to fit a viewing of that in before I pop. I'm such the NPR geek, though.
