I still have not heard back from the woman at the Flexible Spending Account place about why I didn't get my direct deposit and when I'm going to get it. She said she'd call me back by the end of the day yesterday. But!! Just after typing the previous two sentences, I went and checked my bank balance, and the $625 has appeared in my account. YAY.
In other news, yesterday brought a brand-new financial mess, in the form of a letter from the city tax people. Here's what it boils down to: Before the city split us into two separate entities for tax purposes, back when it still considered us one house instead of two condos, it sent a tax bill covering the period from January 1, 2005, through June 30, 2005 (which the city calls the 3rd and 4th quarters of fiscal '05). In January 2005, the letter goes on to say, the city received a payment for half of that amount. Months later, in August, it received a payment for an amount that is roughly (though not precisely) half of the remaining amount.
However, the letter goes on to say, the city does not know who made those two payments. It requests that I figure this out and send them proof of who (or what entity) made those payments and "which account the money was sent to," which I presume means which city tax account. That way they can figure out who still owes them the remaining one-fourth of the original bill.
So, I called my mortgage company and they say that they did make the first payment, of half the amount, which is correct since I own half the building. They did not make the second payment, so one must presume that it was made by Brian (my friend who owns the other half) or his mortgage company, possibly because he/they didn't realize that he/they was/were actually responsible for the entire remainder. In the interim, a $5 charge for being late on the payment, plus interest of .17 cents per day, have been/are being added to the remaining balance. (The letter says ".17 cents per day" and I'm not sure whether that means 17 cents, or seventeen one-hundredths of a cent. But who the hell cares, really?)
The bottom line would appear to be that Brian, my co-homeowner, owes the city some money. And that isn't really my problem, except to make sure that he understands it. After I read the letter yesterday, I went and looked in Brian's mailbox and he had a letter with the same return address (city treasury) so I presume they sent him the same letter that they sent me. But he has a habit of not reading his mail, so I'll probably call him and explain it to him. I also left a message yesterday for the city tax person whose name is signed on the letter, because I would like to discuss it with her just to make sure that I'm understanding correctly. I did also ask my mortgage company to send the city some documentation proving that we paid that first payment, as requested in the city's letter.
When I first read the letter yesterday, I kind of freaked out because the amount it was talking about ($832 and some cents) was quite similar to the amount of the refund that I'm supposedly getting from the city for overpayment on my taxes -- you may recall me posting about this a month or so ago. For a while, I thought that yesterday's letter was saying that the city doesn't actually owe me that $850 so I won't be getting that refund. But after reading the letter over a couple of times and thinking about it, I tentatively concluded that these are two completely unrelated matters and I should still get the $850. I'm still not 100% sanguine about that, though. I guess it's the pessimist in me.
So I'm really hoping that the woman from the city tax office will call me back and straighten it out. Now that I think of it, I gave her my home number in the message I left yesterday, so I better call her again today, and leave my work number if I don't get her on the phone.
sigh, it's always something!
