pregnancy dreams
Feb. 7th, 2006 08:59 pmA few nights ago I had a deeply disturbing dream. I sense that it was one of those that, when described, will just sound banal and silly, but trust me, it was disturbing at the time and kind of freaked me out.
In the dream I was having a prenatal checkup with a doctor I'd never seen before, a youngish man. He did all the usual checkup things that a midwife does, and at the end he said, "everything looks fine except that when I felt your belly I couldn't find the baby's head." I put my hand on my lower belly and felt something round and hard, and was like, what do you mean, isn't this it right here? Then I felt a second round hard thing right next to it, and freaked out like, OMG my baby has two heads! I knew that it couldn't be twins because of all the ultrasounds I've had, but in that strange logic of dreams, it didn't occur to me that the ultrasounds would also have revealed a second head on my one baby.
Anyway, the doctor felt the two lumps, and then he stuck his hand up into me and pulled one of the lumps out my vagina. He was like, "oh, it's just a tumor, no biggie," and tossed it aside. Then he stuck his hand in again and pulled out the other lump. It was like a slimy hairy ball with, on one side, something distinctly resembling a nose and two indentations for eyes.
So I totally freaked out like, OMG YOU PULLED MY BABY'S HEAD OFF, and he was hemming and hawing like, "I don't know what the heck this thing is." Finally he realized that I was freaking out, so he called the hospital's staff psychologist, and she came down and was talking to me about it while I was freaking out and the doctor was being all "la dee dah, isn't this interesting, I wonder what it could be." They were both being totally dismissive of my anxiety, so I was getting more and more upset while they got more and more nonchalant. And that's all I remember of that dream.
Weird eh??
Then a couple of nights later I had a dream in which I had just given birth to the baby, and it was a boy. We were having a "welcome the baby" party for me and another woman (must have been
sandykidd although the dream didn't specify). A woman, actually one of Isaac's infant-room daycare teachers, was holding my baby, and I was like, "give him to me, I haven't even nursed him yet." She was all, "Well, I was about to give him a bath, but if you insist." Another woman, who I think was
dolphin127, was like, "oh, it's normal for a baby to not nurse for the first four days of his life." (Totally not true btw.) I was all, "I don't care, I want to nurse him now." So I took the baby, marveling at how much he looked like Isaac, and tried to nurse him. When I opened my shirt, the baby said, "Isaac want nipple," and I thought to myself, I really have to teach him that his name isn't Isaac. He tried to nurse, but he didn't know how, so it didn't work. He popped off and went for the other boob and said again, "Isaac want nipple," so I gave him the other one, but he didn't have any luck there either. I wasn't too worried though, because I knew it was early and it can take the baby a few tries before he figures out how to nurse. And that was the end of that dream as far as I can recall.
For the record, in reality, Isaac never said "nipple" to mean breastfeeding. We referred to nursing as boob at first ("Isaac want boob") and then changed it to nurse/nursie ("Isaac want nursie") but never nipple. So that part of the dream was weird, that we were calling it something different. Of course, it was also weird that my day-old baby in the dream could talk, heh ;) but then again, when I was pregnant with Isaac, I also had a dream where my baby was only a day old and could already talk. Of course, in that dream the baby was a girl, which turned out not to be the case with Isaac, but that's just a minor detail. ;)
Pregnant dreams are so interesting. Well, I could have done without the disturbing one, but still. :)

Date: 2006-02-08 04:17 am (UTC)I used to regularly have dreams, with both pregnancies, where I'd give birth to the baby early "for practice" (or to see what she looked like or....) and then had to put her back. THAT was a weird one. I was more thorough about recording my pregnancy dreams when I was pregnant with my first daughter and going back to them, several of them were actually prophetic, including one dream about her weight basically telling me the date she'd be born (I just didn't know it at the time).

Date: 2006-02-08 10:47 am (UTC)I was really freaked out by that one when I woke up.
Last week I had a funny one, where I gave birth to one, was home within the hour and was getting with caring for the new baby when I realised I hadn't delivered the placenta. I then had a feel of my tummy and realised there was still a baby in there and got really cross because the midwife should have realised from my notes I was having twins! That one made me laugh when I woke up.
