back from appt
Jan. 19th, 2006 12:53 pmI have returned from my appointment. It went fine. I have gained an impressive (to me, anyway) six pounds since last time, so it's nice to know I'm making up for lost time, heh. Cosmo is head-down right now (although there's still room for him/her to flip if he/she feels like it) and his/her heartbeat was a nice normal 153 beats per minute.
The blood draw for the glucose test was fine. The routine urine test was fine. The vaginal swab for the fibernectin test was a little uncomfortable, but whatever. The midwife also checked me internally (that's tactful medical-speak for "stuck her fingers up in there") and said that my cervix feels fine. She said they will probably check my cervix internally at the next two or three visits and then stop if it continues to feel normal. They probably won't do the fibernectin test again unless today's is positive or something else happens at one of the next few visits. She also said they won't call me about either of today's tests unless the results are of concern. I might call tomorrow anyway, just out of neurosis.
Drinking the glucose drink made me super-hungry, which was annoying. I don't know if it was just psychological from knowing that I wasn't allowed to eat, or what. But whatever, I brought some food to the appointment and ate as soon as they had finished taking my blood. :)
They also gave me a big packet of papers to read, some of which tells me how to recognize signs of preterm labor and what to do about it (ha, ha -- I'm sure they are required to give this to everyone but for me it just seems silly), some of which explains what a healthcare proxy is and a form to fill out to name one (i.e., someone to make decisions for me if I'm unable to make them myself), and all that legalistic jazz.
And then there's the brochure about all the things that can go wrong during labor and childbirth, with accompanying form to sign in which I acknowledge and agree that a) no one has promised me an easy uneventful labor or a healthy baby, and b) I am aware that lots of things could go wrong and if they go wrong there are lots of things that the midwife/doctor might do. It also stipulates that I have the right to refuse any particular procedure or treatment, which is good 'cause otherwise I wouldn't be signing it.
Anyway, so it was all fine and I go back again in two weeks. Whee!

Date: 2006-01-19 08:55 pm (UTC)I'm the same way when I know I have medical results coming back. The whole "I'll call you to set up an appointment if I see anything I don't like" is not reassuring. Then you end up wondering with every phone call. *chuckles* I'd rather go in and find out for myself for certain that everything's fine and dandy.
