mamajoan: me in hammock (smiling little me)

with all the whining I've been doing lately, I've neglected to talk about how great my new job is. It's really been a fantastic two weeks and I'm loving it. The people (all 24 of them in the company besides me) are so friendly. The software we're working on is interesting and cool. There's all the excitement of being a little start-up, plus all the random fun like the little in-jokes and the ability to tease someone even if their job title includes the words "vice" and "president." *And* it's socially responsible, with a recycling program and benefits that help the community -- the company matches charitable contributions up to $200 per person per year, and you can take off up to four *paid* days per year to do volunteer work.

And sure, there've been some frustrations and annoyances, like when I need info and everyone says "oh, ask so-and-so" but then so-and-so says "I have no idea, ask such-and-such." And that kind of thing. But unlike at the bigger companies, you don't feel like everyone's just passing the buck because they can't be bothered, and you don't worry that you're going to be blamed for the problem -- you just get that "we're all in this together" feeling, and you plug away until you solve the thing.

And I've already had nice cat-story-swapping sessions with several of the folks. :) And my (and everyone else's) computer, keyboard, monitor, mouse, and phone are all black, which is just cool. And I have MY OWN OFFICE, which RULES, pardon the shouting.

AND I don't even have to feel like a chick in a man's world -- four of eleven in the engineering department are women. Seven of 25 in the company overall.

So it's all good. It's going well. There is no bad here. I thought y'all should know. :)
