this sucks
May. 6th, 2002 03:15 pmI read about this story last week and it upset me. Today CNN has more info, and it upsets me even more.
Basically, this little girl was under the supervision of the state (whatever they call it, DCFS?) in Florida, but the caseworkers had not checked up on her since January 2001. More than a year. Finally someone calls the grandmother (who has custody) to set up an appointment, and the grandmother says, "Gee, I handed her over to some people who claimed to be social workers back in January 2001. I've been calling and calling to find out how she's doing, but no one ever calls me back."
DCFS has no record of the grandmother calling. Of course, they have no record of any caseworkers taking the child away. And they have no record of anyone from their office checking up on this child for over a year. They don't know where the hell she is, and no one can explain why it took this long to notice.
The odds at this point are very good that the little girl is dead. But no one knows for sure.
I'm PMSing right now so I react even more strongly, which means I'm actually shedding tears over this instead of just shaking my head and sighing. I just don't want to know that stuff like this can happen in my world. The poor child. The poor grandmother. And I don't even have any cuss-words strong enough for the caseworkers. Slow dismemberment with rusty butter-knives, anyone? :(
