mamajoan: me in hammock (waaah)

Yesterday I had some more diarrhea. Then as I was going to bed, I noticed some brown vaginal spotting. But spotting can be normal, and it was midnight so I just went to bed.

Woke up at 6am. More diarrhea, but no more spotting. Back to bed around 6:30, got almost another hour of sleep before Isaac woke.

Then more diarrhea and more spotting -- thick, gloopy, brown. And lightheaded and VERY nauseated. Decided to call the midwife.

So I had the midwife paged and she said that amount of diarrhea is not normal. She actually seemed more concerned about the diarrhea than the spotting -- the former could actually cause the latter, as anything passing through the bowels passes near the cervix and can irritate it and cause it to spot some. But she definitely said that the diarrhea was of concern and that I shouldn't wait till my appointment on Friday. So I'm going in this morning to get looked at. I feel AWFUL. The nausea is worse than it has been just about ever, and I'm light-headed, probably from dehydration at this point. I had to call my mom and get her to cancel her dentist appointment (*guilt, guilt*) and she came over to get Isaac and take him to daycare.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to go get a diarrhea sample for them to analyze and try not to freak out in the hour before I leave for the appointment.

sigh.

How odd. Could it be something you ate, and not pregnancy related?

doubtful, just because it has been going on SO long -- basically since I found out I was pregnant, so like two months now. And I know that once-a-week diarrhea is bizarre anyway; if it had been more often I probably would have called sooner. But I haven't been able to trace it to any particular food. So I mean, it could certainly be non-pregnancy-related, but I really don't think it's anything I ate.

Huh. If the midwife can't find anything, I'd definitely call your GP, just in case...

I don't know if this is reassuring or not, but I still have the runs pretty often too. Mine DOES seem to be at least somewhat food related, though. I don't seem to be able to handle ice cream and several other dairy products (completely random what they might be on any given day). Deep-fried tofu also seems to be problematic. When I told my doc, she said "yeah, that happens to some people."

I hope that yours clears up soon. Drink sports drinks or lightly sweetened tea to keep your electrolytes in check. (also I've been told that puking gatorade isn't so bad because it tastes pretty good coming up...) I'll be thinking about you. Can Isaac stay with your mom tonight? Maybe are seriously good night of sleep could do you wonders.

Jeez. Good luck.

Hope it turns out to be unrelated to the progress of #2, and easy to cure.

Good luck,

I hope that you find a solution to the diarrhea, and that the spotting turns out to be nothing to worry about. As far as staying hydrated, you might want to get some Pedialyte or Emnergen-C to help keep your electrolytes in balance while you replace fluids.

Eep! Feel better there. I know, too much Sting in one week can be a lot for the gastrointestinal system to take. He'll be gone soon, never fear. ;-)

LOL yeah, when in doubt blame Sting.

Wow, I really hope everything is OK with both you and Cosmo!!!!

That being said, I know you don't want a lecture...but I'm gonna give you one anyway. I continue to be concerned about your diet. I hear (read) you talking about all the sugar/carbs you eat, with not enough protein and not enough vegies. I know you're dedicated to not eating meat....but you seriously need to UP your protein intake...esp. while you're pregnant. You should be eating at least tofu/beans, if not eggs and cheese, every day. And, don't hate me...but that daily bagel has got to go! Bagels are way too carby, and should be a once-a-week treat. In light of your bowel situation, I would recommend some good Chinese soups (vegetarian stock OK) and lots of cooked vegies and tofu and scrambled eggs. And maybe some bananas (no acidic fruits for now). Oh, and ice cream gives lots of people diahhrea. I would look at that as a possible cause.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

:) Thanks for your concern. You can go read my update post for all the details.

The truth is that normally I eat a pretty good diet. I eat lots of fruits and veggies, a fair amount of tofu and cheese, and almost exclusively whole-grain breads (including the bagels!). But during the first trimester it all goes out the window because I'm so nauseated all the time and the junk is the only stuff that sounds appealing. I fully expect the nausea to get a LOT better in the next few weeks, and I'll be able to go back to my normal healthy eating habits.

(And I know I talk about ice cream a lot, but I honestly don't eat it all that often!)

OK, sorry for lecturing. ;)

I'm just really into eating healthy...and I want all my friends to be healthy, too. :)

BTW, have you tried ginger for the nausea? Also, what about the old traditional saltine crackers?
