Whoa. Was that the weirdest play ever, or what? Poor Graffy looked so lost, lol.

*hopes Kapler is okay*

Oh geez. That's what I get for watching a DVD instead of the game. I swear, I turn my back for a second...

Heh, well it must have been more than a second, because there was a good five or ten minutes of standing around going "uh, what do we do?" It would have been funny if not for the utter suckage of losing Kapler.

Yeh, IIRC the rules say that if a runner passes the runner ahead of him, he's out. For example, Robby Runner is caught in a rundown between first and second; meanwhile, Bobby Batter rounds first and tags up at second while the defense is distracted. Nope. Or maybe Robby just trips and takes a header between the bags; Bobby can't pass him.

I wonder if there's anything in the rules about the runner having to round the bases under his own steam. Specifically, could Tony have picked Gabe up and carried him around, carefully tagging each bag with Gabe's good foot before tagging it himself? This is assuming anyone smaller than say Hulk Hogan could pick up Gabe Kapler.

I've never heard of substituting a player in what was technically the middle of a play. Are they challenging it?

They did eventually dig up the rule book and showed the rule onscreen. It says that if a runner is disabled and can't get to the base(s) to which he's entitled, a pinch runner can be brought in to complete the play. And that's what happened. Machado came in and finished Kapler's run around the bases, and then Graffy was able to finish his run.

For a minute there it looked like they were going to have Kapler lean on the two trainers and hobble around the bases himself, but fortunately they didn't go there. That would have been even MORE painful to watch.

Ahh, there you go.
If there's one amazing thing about baseball, it's how they have thought of frickin everything. There are plays in the rulebook I can't even imagine happening.

I know! And you read it and say "well geez, that would never happen," and then it DOES. Baseball can be so weird like that.
