something skunky
Sep. 14th, 2005 11:25 amThe last few days I've noticed an increase in the number of roadkill along my commute -- specifically skunks. I'm seeing a lot more dead skunks than usual, and by "seeing" I mean "seeing and smelling." It's amazing how long the smell of a dead skunk can last. And by "how long" I mean in both temporal and physical measurements, i.e., the smell lasts for days and miles. Ugh.
I seem to recall a similar dead-skunk epidemic happening, uh, was it this time last year? Or was it last spring? So I'm wondering: what causes this? Is there one (or two) special week(s) per year when the young skunk's thoughts turn lightly to suicide? Is there a spring skunk-migration season and a fall skunk-migration season? Is there something about this time of year that makes the skunks develop a burning desire to throw themselves into oncoming traffic? Why did the skunk cross the road?
In almost but not entirely unrelated news, sometimes when my cat farts it smells like skunk. I thought you should know.
