I'm really upset about the whole hurricane thing (in particular
maggiesox keeps posting new links to stories that piss me off! :( ) and it does make all my petty crap start to seem, uh, petty. But whatever, what else do I have?
Yesterday we went to a Lowell Spinners game. The Spinners are the Class A affiliate of the Red Sox, which means that they're at the lowest level of aspiring to be professional baseball players. Most of the players looked to be about twelve years old ;) (most of them are actually in their early 20s) but they certainly took the game seriously and played hard. There were some boneheaded plays, of the kind that you'd almost never see at the major-league level -- or if you did see it, the commentators would spend the rest of the game carping on what an idiot that player was -- but that's going to happen, I guess; there's a reason these guys are still at the single-A level.
Anyway, the outing was sponsored by my company, and before the game we had dinner in the BBQ buffet underneath the stadium. There wasn't a whole lot of vegetarian fare, but I had anticipated that and eaten in advance. It was still fun to have free corn on the cob and ice cream and drinks, and my mom enjoyed partaking of the charred animal flesh. ;)
And the game was fun. It's definitely a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, with stuff happening between each half-inning, like races or little games/contests on the field, with kids picked out of the audience to play. There was a pretty good-sized crowd and they were definitely into it, both the game and the in-between entertainment. It was a fun experience all around. Isaac was terrified of the mascot (a big green and yellow alligator) but otherwise he had a good time. He greatly enjoys applauding, which there were plenty of opportunities to do; and whenever a Spinner gets a hit the whole audience stomps on the metal floor of the seating area so it makes a big noise, and Isaac greatly enjoyed the stomping as well. ;)
The game started at 7 so we didn't stay for the whole thing of course. We left around 8:15 which was already getting pretty late by Isaac bedtime standards (it was about a 45-minute drive back home). But the Spinners were up 8-1 when we left so it was looking pretty good. They're in a playoff race apparently. Go Spinners!

Date: 2005-09-02 06:58 pm (UTC)It's a different kind of experience from the majors, of course. But by AA they usually have some idea who the good prospects are (I remember seeing Nomar and Carl Pavano and Trot Nixon and Kevin Youkilis there, for example), so you can go for the fun family stuff or for halfway-decent baseball, and sit ten rows up for $8 and park for $1.
