I don't wanna!
Aug. 26th, 2005 03:42 pmI can't deal! We had another okay-but-not-great night, I did get a reasonable amount of sleep, but I just feel so freaking tired today, and I want to cry just thinking about all the shit I have to do for the weekend. or really, within the next hour and a half because how much can you get done after 5pm on Friday?
To wit, I am talking about dealing with my car. I've been using my mom's car this week and that's been fine, but she's going to want it on the weekend. So I have to figure out whether I need a rental, or really when I need the rental. And then I have to arrange for the rental, and arrange for pickup and delivery and all that. And then if I'm going to have the rental more than 3 days, I have to call my insurance company and have them authorize it.
(Rant Alert)
I really don't understand the way this insurance stuff works. As best I can tell it goes like this:
1. You have an accident. Your car gets towed to the nearest tow yard.
2. You notify your insurance company of the accident.
3. They send someone out to look at the car and assess the damage.
4. Someone else looks at the report and decides how much money they'll pay for the repairs. They tell you this will take 3-5 days, and then they mail it to you.
5. You find a repair place that will do the repairs for the amount offered by the insurance company.
6. The repair place fixes the car and the insurance company sends them the money (or sends you the money and you fork it over).
Now let's look at time frames. Say the accident happens late at night on a Monday. You can still notify your insurance company at that point, because they have a 24-hour claim line, but it won't be till Tuesday at the earliest before the guy actually goes to look at the car. If things go really fast, then by Wednesday the adjustor will have seen the damage report, written up the estimate, and mailed it to you. If the mail gods are on your side, you might get the damage report on Friday. Now, you can call the repair place on Friday and tell them to start working on the repairs, but will they really start on Friday? Heck no. They'll get started on Monday -- and that's if you're LUCKY and they aren't totally swamped. And then, depending on how severe the damage is, how many parts they have to order, how long the parts take to arrive, etc., it might be the following Friday (or even later) before they finish the repairs.
By this time it has been over a week and a half since the accident, and you still have no car. Meanwhile, your insurance company only approved you for three days of a rental. WTF? And if you, like me, are unlucky enough to actually have the accident on a Friday, then things drag out even MORE, because it'll be Monday before the appraiser even goes out to look at the damage. And again, that's if you're LUCKY. In my case, the order went out on Monday, but the appraiser didn't go out till Wednesday. In other words, it had been more than three days (the allowed rental time) after the accident before anyone even LOOKED at the car!!!
Is it just me, or is this shit FUCKED UP??
I know I should be grateful to even fucking have insurance, and I know they'll approve me for more rental time if I ask, and I know I should be glad that I have the option of using my mom's car, but JESUS.
Of course, if you're made of money, you can just tell the shop to start on the repairs immediately, and then cross your fingers that what they charge and what the insurance company offers will mesh. Or shrug and resign yourself to paying the difference. I'm not fucking made of money so that's not an option.
Obviously this shit is seriously stressing me out. I don't want to drive a rental. I want to go to the cottage this weekend, but my mom is going to stay for Monday, and I can't stay for Monday*, so I can't drive out with her. I don't want to drive to the cottage and back by myself in a rental. I wish I had a friend who wanted to come to the cottage and drive me and Isaac back home on Sunday night. But I have very few friends who even have cars, let alone who have cars and actually answer their phones, let alone have cars and answer their phones and are likely to not already have plans for the weekend that starts in two hours.
* I could take the day off, but I really just don't want to.
sigh.
I guess I'll go call the rental place. I'll just tell them I want to pick it up on Saturday, on account of they're closed on Sunday. Of course, then if I do find someone to come to the cottage on Sunday, the rental will sit on the street outside my house for two days. Talk about pointless. Well, it's the insurance company's money so who gives a fuck.
argh!
