Isaac seems to get these mystery rashes a lot, which usually seem not to bother him much but cause his daycare providers to have cows (and cause some amount of worry to me; but I'm getting more relaxed about them over time).

Well, he got another one today. Unfortunately, it developed in the car en route to daycare, so I didn't really notice it until we arrived (although I did keep looking in the rear-view mirror and thinking, "is that a pimple? was that there this morning?" It was all over his face, so very noticeable; it was also on his arms and chest. He's had a little something for a while, but today it was much worse. It looked basically like pimples when they're healing, so they aren't as raised, but are very red. And then there were some bumps that did just look like pimples.

When I walked into daycare with him, since the rash was on his face, the director and assistant director noticed it immediately and asked about it, and I said I thought maybe it was heat rash, and they said it didn't look like heat rash to THEM, and we all examined his arms and legs and belly and face, and finally they said I would need a doctor's note. Siiiigh. So I took him to the office (sorry [livejournal.com profile] calligrafiti) and called the pediatrician. Luckily, the nurse-practitioner at our ped's office could see him at 11.

We hung out at the office for a little while, just long enough for me to have my DESPERATELY needed caffeine (did I mention that Isaac woke up at 5am? urrgghhh), and then went to see the NP. She said she didn't know what the rash was either, but she felt quite confident that it wasn't contagious. She suggested maybe a reaction to sunscreen, soap, lotion...? I'm not really sure what to think, since I've not changed anything recently that I know of. The only thing that comes to mind is laundry detergent; I didn't change brands, but I changed flavors/scents, and maybe that makes a difference. Who knows??

Anyway, the NP wrote a note saying it's not contagious, so he was allowed to go back to daycare; we arrived just as they were finishing lunch and starting nap, which was fortuitous because he was hungry and exhausted. I imagine he inhaled his spaghetti and then went right to sleep. So all's well that ends well, except for not knowing what the heck it is/was! Any ideas??

I'm just glad it didn't turn out to be something that would have required us to stay home all day. OMG! In this weather, and us without AC at home?? I would have DIED. Seriously, just expired of heat exhaustion right there on the floor. It's like 97 F here today with like 97% humidity. After I dropped Isaac off at daycare the second time, I stopped into the grocery store near the office to grab some lunch, and when I emerged, my glasses fogged over. Literally. OMG.

I wish we could camp out at the office all night! Oh sweet central AC, I love you so! *groan*

My daughter used to get that. I can't remember what it's called but it went away as she got older.

Could be the change in scent in your laundry powder. What did he eat, is my usual question. I get a similar reaction if I eat too many deadly nightshades - eggplant, onion, capsicum, tomoato and also from berries.

Yeah, they did ask me what he had eaten, but I couldn't think of anything that he hasn't eaten a million times before.

I build up an intolerance to some fruits so I can go ages eating something and its fine but if I eat a lot of it in a couple of days, I get a similar rash. If you can't think of anything like that, then I guess the laundry detergent. Or... maybe he touched somthing, like a plant? (From Australia, so there are plants that can do that here)

yeah, but things caused by plants usually itch, right?

I guess the food thing is a possibility too. I'll definitely keep it in mind.

I guess just look out for it - if its an allergy, there will be a pattern.

OMG, are you completely INSANE? You live in an area with 97% humidity, and you bought a house that doesn't have air conditioning?!?!?!

I-would-just-DIE

As for Isaac's rash, it sound like an allergy to me. Allergies can pop up all of a sudden, so maybe look for what he's eaten or touched or worn when they occur?

LOL, spoken like a Californian. Very few houses out here have central air, I mean VERY few. And most of those are new construction. In an old house like mine (1890s by the inspector's estimate) it would cost a fortune to retrofit it, so most people get window units and/or just suffer.

And anyway, normally we only have like 5-10 days per year of really high humidity. Didn't I say that? I think I did.

I just figured the entire east coast would have air conditioning. When I've been there (New York, various New England states) during the summer, I just about died.

Here in the SF Bay Area, we have three different weather systems: coast, bay, and inland. Temps can vary as much as 40 degrees between the coast and inland!! In summertime, if you live inland, you simply cannot exist without air conditioning. For example, this weekend, inland temps are expected to reach 105. Here in Oakland (bay system) where I live, however, the high will be more like 80. If you live where my sister does (in San Francisco a few blocks from the ocean) (coast system), you never need air conditioning, as summer temps rarely exceed 60-70.

Anyway, please accept my sympathies on your horrid weather. I really can't stand oppressive heat.
