Man, what a wacky weekend-plus!!! Almost 2pm on Monday before I finally get a chance to update!
Obligatory weather comment: Isn't it amazing how fast we can go from bitching about the cold to bitching about the heat? It seems that here in lovely Massachusetts we have skipped over spring and gone directly to summer. It has been in the upper 80s/lower 90s (F) for about a week now and I am seriously considering getting an air conditioner for the first time in my life.
Obligatory weekend summary follows.
Saturday: Did a load of laundry, went to the store for swim diapers, packed car and drove to the cottage. Except that makes it sound all nice and orderly and simple, when in fact it was a ridiculously insane crazy day, the kind that you couldn't make into a sitcom episode because people would be like "this is stupid, it's totally unrealistic." All kinds of ridiculous shit went wrong and I was seriously going nuts. I mean, by the time we were actually in the car and on the way to the highway to go to the cottage, I was literally screaming obscenities at other drivers at the top of my lungs. Which I never do! I was more hopped up on adrenaline than actually angry/road-rage-y, mind you.
The sweltering heat and ridiculous humidity made all of that stuff even worse, of course. It's days like that you just keep thinking, "Dammit, I could be at the cottage right now!!!" and anything that keeps you from getting there is maddening.
Just to give one example of how things went on Saturday: at one point my mom called in a panic to say that she had locked herself out of her house and I had to come over and let her in. So I dropped everything and threw Isaac in the car -- more complicated than it might sound because I had taken the cover off his carseat to wash it, and it was in the dryer. Had to grab it, put it back on the carseat, figure out how to re-thread the straps around it, reinstall the carseat in the car, and then go, with Isaac sitting on the still-damp cover. Now, my mom's upstairs neighbor M has a key to mom's apartment, but from mom having called me, I assumed that M wasn't home. I kept thinking, "I'll get halfway there and she'll call to say that M just came home." I was partly right. Halfway there, mom called to say that M had come downstairs and let her in. Mom: "I can't believe she was home on a Saturday!" Me: "Fuck that, I can't believe you called me before you rang her bell!!!" Yes, I actually said "fuck that." I was super-pissed. Mom was properly apologetic as, admittedly, it was a stupid thing to do. So I had to turn around and go back home. And did I mention that there was construction on the main street by my house, so I had to take a huge detour both times?
In my mom's defense, she very rarely does idiotic shit like that, but she just panicked.
ANYway, we finally did get to the cottage, and so did mom (she in my car, me in hers; long story), and we had some fun splashing in the water, etc., and then we did the little birthday thing for Isaac. Mom had baked a cake, so we just lit two candles, sang the song, tried to get Isaac to blow the candles out, and then gave him some presents. Mom gave him some really good stuff and he was delighted, though of course the whole birthday thing is meaningless to him.
Sunday, more hot humid weather.
ww1614 came to the cottage with her two kids, and my now-ex-coworker Jim came with his son, and a good time was had by all. Alas, Isaac wnet down for his nap midway through lunch, so we couldn't do another candles-and-song thing for his birthday, but we distributed cake to all takers anyway. Then everyone left, which was just as well because soon afterward there was a major thunderstorm with torrential rain and all. It was something else. We sat inside the cottage and watched it. Eventually it ended and then I packed us up and we drove back home. (Mom stayed for today.) I hoped Isaac would fall asleep in the car, but he didn't. He was cheery though, he just sat there in his carseat singing little songs to himself. (One of his songs consists of the last line of "I'm A Little Teapot" repeated over and over: "Tip me over and pour me out. Tip me over and pour me out." Etc. Except that when Isaac does it, it's cute.)
When we got home, it was super-hot and humid. Ugh. Apparently the cooling thunderstorms hadn't made it this far east. It was just sticky and awful. Of course, Isaac was beat so he went right to sleep, but I had more trouble getting down. ah well.
This morning, we went to the body shop to drop off the car for the repairs, and then a guy from Enterprise Rent-A-Car came and picked us up and took us to their office and we got a rental car. Another example of a process that is way more annoying in the heat, and way more involved when you have a child in tow. Not only did we have a lot of stuff (my work bag, my purse, Isaac's diaper bag, another plastic bag of misc.), but I had to take the carseat out of my car, put it in the pickup car, then transfer it to the rental car; all while keeping an eye on Isaac so he wouldn't, like, run out into traffic. I ended up putting him in the car on the front passenger seat while I was doing the carseat install, just so that I would know where he was.
Anyway, that all got done and we drove to daycare, by which time it was almost lunchtime and Isaac was getting pretty cranky from hunger and tiredness. He seemed to perk up when he got hold of some toys though. I hope he's having a good day now.
And then I came to work, whee. Damn, was I glad I had had the foresight to bring along another shirt. I was drenched in sweat by the time I got here. Ugh.
I feel like there's a lot more to say, but it'll have to wait till my brain rejoins me.
