1) How many books do you have?

I'm amazed by the concept of people actually knowing how many books they have. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I have more than 20 but fewer than 500.

2) What is the last book you bought?

If books ordered on Amazon but not yet received count, then the answer is That's Not My Truck. If it has to be a book for me, then I believe the answer is Antartica by Kim Stanley Robinson, but I haven't started reading it yet.

3)What is the last book you read?

I'm trying to remember, and I believe it was The Free Lunch by Spider Robinson (no relation to Kim Stanley as far as I know), which I posted here to recommend.

I don't get a lot of time to read these days, other than kiddie books; but I do try.

4) Five books that mean a lot to me.

Okay, this is going to be tough but I'll give it a try.

a. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. One of the first books that really touched me in many ways, and I so identified with Jo.

b. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein. Not the first Heinlein that I ever read, but definitely the one that formed much of my opinion/feeling about what I like my sci-fi to be like.

c. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl. For some reason, when I was a kid and got upset and wanted to hide from the world, this was the book I took with me. I must have read it twenty times by the time I hit puberty.

d. The Secret Country by Pamela Dean ([livejournal.com profile] pameladean). Because I read this at just the right moment in my early-adolescent writer-wannabe life, and it hit me in just the right way, as the kind of book I aspire to write someday.

e. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Because it makes it okay, even great, to be zany; and because it provides so much of the context for geek life in my generation. And because it's just fun to read, dammit, even for the hundredth time.

Okay, I see that a lot of the folks on my flist are putting all kinds of serious literary tomes on their lists, and I guess I could come up with one or two of those for my list too, but dammit, these are five books that mean a lot to me; take 'em or leave 'em. Nyah.

5) Tag five others to do this meme.

I'm going to skip this part because it seems like everyone on my flist has already done it. But if you haven't, and you'd like to, then consider yourself tagged.
