It appears to be a new day. Funny how that happens.

Last night my chorus performed at the city of Cambridge's annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony. My mom and I took turns entertaining Isaac who, not surprisingly, turned out to be very bad at sitting still and being extremely quiet while people make speeches. ;) Luckily, the temple where they hold the ceremony has a daycare center in the basement, so we took him down there and there were all kinds of toys and books that kept him quite happy.

So mom and I each missed about half of the ceremony, but it worked out okay. Mom got to see the part she really wanted -- the part where an actual Holocaust survivor made a speech (which I also hated to miss but oh well) -- and I got to see the part I really wanted, which is the part where people in the audience are invited to stand up and say the names of people who died in the Holocaust whom they want to remember (usually their relatives). That never fails to move me to tears. Some people will say "my grandmother [name] and my grandfather [name] and my aunts [name]" and so on, others will say "my great-aunt [name] and her three children whose names I don't know," and some will also say where/how they died, e.g., "my uncle Moishe who died at Dachau" or whatever. And one woman announced, "All the sisters of my father. [pause] Eight of them." That really got me. :(

There have been some nasty incidents with neo-Nazis lately in Boston and suburbs, so there was a police presence at the ceremony, albeit a small and unobtrusive one. That was sobering.

My chorus performed a brief song near the beginning of the ceremony and another near the end. It went fine. I had missed the pre-ceremony last-minute rehearsal, but that didn't really matter as I learn music fast and am a good sight-reader. So it was all good.

There were people there who knew me as a child and who hadn't seen me in ages and were quite surprised to see me with a child of my own. :) That's always fun. One woman came up to us and said to my mom, "this isn't your daughter???" and turned out to have been one of my daycare/preschool teachers. She said some very lovely and interesting things about what kind of child I was, which I wish I could remember the exact words she used because they resonated somewhat with my feelings lately about the kind of child Isaac is. So that was interesting.

Anyway, the thing ended at 8:30 and then there were cookies and schmoozing, so we didn't get home till 9:15 and Isaac went to sleep almost immediately. And this morning he didn't wake up till about 7:15 and then we fell asleep again in my bed and got up around 8:30. I'm working from home, and my mom came and got Isaac and was going to take him on the subway again, since he so enjoyed it last weekend.

Other than actual work, the following items are on my to-do list for today, listed in order from most to least likely to actually get done:
* Laundry (white load, colored warm load, cold load)
* Shower
* Return shovel to J and take lightbulbs to [livejournal.com profile] anotherjen (this is one item because they live so close together)
* Go to post office, mail book to [livejournal.com profile] rainbow_goddess and 2 other items to other people
* Grocery shopping (nothing that I desperately need, but some of my staples are on sale till tomorrow)
* Mow the lawn
* Clean out my car
