Hee hee...
The scene: me in the employee kitchen preparing my all-important Monday morning caffeine. Our receptionist passes by and I ask her to get me a clip for my keycard, in hopes of preventing me from constantly misplacing it like I have been doing the last couple of weeks. She gets me one, and as I clip it on, I mention that I blame the weather for making me lose my keycard a lot; when the weather starts getting nicer I start wearing pants without pockets and thus have nowhere to carry my keycard, so it goes missing a lot.
A male coworker says somewhat surprisedly, "Pants without pockets? do they make such a thing?"
Me: Well, probably not for men, but for women they certainly do.
Him: What, pockets are unsightly? it's a fashion thing?
Me: No, it's all part of the vast...
Him: Oh, I can see it coming, don't go there...
Me: ...patriarchal conspiracy to force women to carry purses, thus weighing them down -- it's all part of the Man's way to keep us down!
Him: I knew you would go there.
Me: I hate to disappoint.
;)
In other news, Mother's Day was quite the eventful day chez us. In the morning we went to gramma's house and fetched gramma and then we took the subway downtown. My mom and I weren't sure how Isaac would feel about riding the subway; on the one hand he's totally into trains and train-tracks and tunnels and bridges right now, OTOH it's noisy and dark and stuff. As it turned out, he LOVED it! He was just staring at everything with the widest eyes. It was so funny. People around us were laughing at him. When the train came out of the tunnel and went onto the bridge over the Charles River, his eyes nearly popped out, he couldn't look at everything enough. LOL, it was great. Then we got off the train and exited the station, and Isaac tried to run back inside, going "more choo-choo train! more choo-choo train!" and cried when we pulled him away, no matter how much we explained that we'd come ride the train again later. LOL.
So we went briefly to a playground to regroup, then we walked over to Boston Garden to see the swan-boats, and fed some crackers to squirrels and ducks, then read the signs saying not to feed the squirrels and ducks (d'oh), walked around a bit more. Isaac was having a great time, but it was REALLY fucking cold, which doesn't bother him at all but bothered us. We were thinking of watching some of the Ducklings Parade (they have this parade based on the book Make Way for Ducklings where little kids dress up as ducklings, too cute) but it was cold and we were hungry so we bugged out. We took the subway back, and then because my mom's foot was acting up (she twisted her ankle a few weeks ago and it keeps getting better and then worse again), we took a bus from Central Square to her house, even though it's only a few blocks and normally we would just have walked.
Then we went back to our house and put Isaac down for his nap, and my mom's friend Grace who is an experienced gardener came over to look at our yard and tell us what all the plants were, which ones are weeds, which ones are dead and should be removed, which ones need pruning, etc., and to give us advice on how to spruce the whole thing up. It was cool because we are totally clueless, so it was fun to hear her tell what all the things are and stuff. She, like pretty much everyone who lives in the city and likes to garden, was practically salivating upon seeing how humongous our backyard is and thinking of the possibilities. So we made a date with her for two weeks hence to come over and work with us on clearing away the weeds and dead plants, trimming the plants that need trimming, and so forth. As Brian put it, we don't mind doing some of the work, we just need someone to tell us what the heck to do. ;) So I feel really excited about that, because truthfully it looks pretty crappy, especially in the front, and it'll be nice to just dig in and pull out all the icky stuff and make it all look nice.
Anyway, then Grace left, and my mom was elevating and icing her foot, so I took a nice shower and we watched bits of the Red Sox double-header; then we got Isaac up and headed out for dinner. The first restaurant we tried to go to was closed (hmf!) so we went to another one and had a nice meal. There were a lot of families with kids there; it's a good kid-friendly place (S&S in Inman Square, for those who know the area). Right next to our table there was a family with a little girl just Isaac's age and an older one. As they were getting ready to leave, the younger one tried to climb out of her restaurant-provided high chair, and the mom caught her literally just in time to prevent a severe face-plant on the floor. She was a little monkey! A minute later she tried to scale her mother and climb up the walls. LOL.
Then we went across the street for ice cream, then took gramma home and took ourselves home and went to bed. Whew!!
So it was a nice day overall, although I'm still really bitter about the crappy weather. Seriously, what the hell? It's fucking MAY and we were wearing scarves and our warm coats. SCARVES!!! I ask you.
We have tickets for tomorrow night's Red Sox game, but if the weather is going to be anything like it was yesterday, I'm not sure I want to go. And anyway our babysitter called to say she isn't available, so whether I want to go may turn out to be moot. :(
And that's my eventful update for the moment. More later, you can count on it. ;)
