Did I mention that the floors in my new place are lookin' good? This friend-of-a-friend named Tony came over and ripped up all the carpets and found that the hardwood floors underneath are in great shape. All they need is a good going-over with Murphy's Oil Soap, of which the previous owner kindly left me an almost-full bottle. Yay! I'm so relieved that the floors don't need any major work.

I bit the bullet and hired movers. I was waffling on whether to hire movers or rent a truck and get my friends to help, but a lot of my friends are out of town or busy or, ahem, noncommunicative ;) and I was calling Deathwish Piano Movers (yep, that's their name!) to move my piano anyway, and it turns out that they move regular stuff too, and the guy said he'd give me a discount on the piano if I was also hiring them to move the rest of my stuff. So I said what the hell and went for it. I figure, at $145/hour for three large strong experienced guys plus a truck, it'll be worth it for the peace of mind and the NOT having to worry about doing it myself. They're scheduled for Thursday the 27th, and I don't have to be completely out of the apt until the 1st, so I can even be not-completely-packed-yet and have them just take my major stuff and do the rest of it myself over the weekend. Whee!

So now the next important thing to do is find someone to clean the place before I start bringing my stuff in. I'm calling a few people/services trying to find one that's reasonably cheap -- not that I have any clue how much such a thing should cost! But I'll figure something out....

I also called Verizon and arranged to have my phone connected and DSL set up. I have come to hate RCN with a white-hot passion over the past year or so, so not only am I ditching them as my phone and Internet provider, I'm also ditching them as my cable-TV provider too, even though some people claim that Comcast is equally (or more) evil. We'll see.

Now all I gotta do is figure out what to do about the lead paint, the lead in the water, and the electrical work that needs done ... augh!

We have lead pipes in our city (long story, there was a lawsuit and the pipes are being replaced, but it's going to take awhile) so we use bottled water almost exclusively. However, after Adrian's first dental appointment, we were reminded that fluoride is important, and not normally a part of bottled water. So now we buy special fluoridated bottled water. We can get giant gallon jugs of it for about the same price as the other stuff, and it's helping a lot. I think the brand is called Nursery something or other, and there's always a picture of a smiling baby on the front.

Oh! Wood floors are so lovely. They are absolute havens for cat-hair dust bunnies, though.

That's okay. Vacuuming cat hair off of wood is a lot easier than off of carpet.

Hey! I just added you as a friend now that I know who you are. Since most of my entries are friends locked (had a death threat type stalker last summer), you now know that I write a LOT if you care to read it.

I have a hunch we're going to bond over home improvements. =)

Whee! Although, considering how broke I now am, I'm going to do a lot more fantasizing about home improvements than actually performing them. ;)
