mamajoan: me in hammock (bini yawn)

Last night I did something I basically never do -- took drugs to relieve the symptoms of a cold/flu. My mom never believed in symptom relief when we were growing up, so I still have that mindset, even though I'm allowed to make my own decisions now ;). Anyway, normally I do feel that one should let the cold run its course and not try to stop the bodily fluids from flowing because they serve a purpose, but this coughing that I've been doing has been keeping me up, waking Isaac up, and making me fret about waking Isaac up, so I was like, "fuck it, I'm taking some Robitussin."

Oh, I should add that the Urgent Care doctor I saw on Saturday suggested Robitussin too, with the expectorant and cough suppressant. I vaguely recalled reading in Consumer Reports that you shouldn't take those two things together because if you're suppressing the cough then how are you supposed to expectorate? I mentioned that to the doctor and he said that the expectorant's purpose is really to loosen and thin the phlegm, so that when you do cough, it comes out more easily. So I was like, eh, okay. So I bought some generic tussin and took it last night.

Man, does that stuff taste NASTY. It really makes you wonder why they bother putting flavoring and sugar in it. Why not just leave it as-is and say "try to swallow it without tasting it, dude," because that's what everyone is gonna have to do anyway? I suppose there are probably some sick weirdos out there who actually like the taste and are ruining it for the rest of us. Jerks.

Anyway, the main point is, the fucking stuff didn't WORK. I coughed more last night than I did the night before, and as a consequence got very little sleep. This sucks. I should get my money back or some damn thing. You know what I would really like, though, is for some schlub who's responsible for selling me that nasty-tasting ineffective sludge to come over my apartment tonight and take care of my baby while I get some goddamn sleep. That seems fair, doesn't it?

Now if you'll excuse me, the caffeine is calling.

go for Nyquil. It has the same ingredients with the extra "knock-your-butt out" factor so you do sleep. Although Isaac, I don't know how you'd feel about taking something with a sleep-aid -- I've been able to wake up after using it when the phone rings, if that's an indication

Nyquil is not recommended for breastfeeding moms. Robitussin is considered safe.

totally forgot about the breastfeeding. Man -- given I have 1-2 nasty viruses every season, I don't know what I'm going to do with out my Nyquil. Let me know what, if any, herbal stuff works!

sounds like you are seriously congested and the expectorant part allowed your lungs to start clearing. If you want something for sleeping, take one of the medecines that are targeted at that purpose like Nyquil.

Yeah, cough syrup tastes nasty, but DXM tastes even nastier by itself, be glad it is in a syrup with things to try and mask the taste (though life was much better back when they sold it in capsules. Actually if you are taking a cough and cold medecine, they still sell that in capsules.

see my reply above -- Nyquil isn't recommended while breastfeeding. I really should have skipped the expectorant and just gotten the Robitussin cough suppressant since that's what I really wanted. I didn't feel all that congested, it was really just not wanting to cough for overnight. oh well.

Get thee to some Buckley's.

No clue about its breastfeeding safety (though I hunch it's OK, since it's mostly herbal, but Buckley's, like the slogan says, tastes awful, and it WORKS.

It's like slurping down the liquid essence of an entire pine tree, reduced to a very concentrated spoonful.

Supposedly, Eckerd and Rite Aid has it nationwide. It's made in Canada, and I know about it because my wife's family, from Niagara Falls NY, are big users. It really does work.

nyquil and dayquil liquicaps all the way baby. that stuff works well for me and like you, i dont like taking it, but when its bad, you go to the mattresses. anyway, try sleeping elevated slightly, like put an extra pillow behind your head so that your shoulders and head are a bit higher than normal. i find that this helps, especially when you have a cough. good luck! i hope you feel better soon!
