my weekend

Better late than never, an update on my eventful weekend.

I knew it was foolish to even consider going shopping on the last Saturday before Xmas, but I wanted to return some items to Carter's (kids' clothing store) and get some new stuff there with my 20%-off coupon that was expiring Monday. (Isaac really needs sleepers as he's rapidly outgrowing all the ones he's got!) Unfortunately, the Carter's store is right next to Target and the parking lot is crazy even on a *normal* Saturday. So I thought I would drive partway there, park, and take a bus the rest of the way.

But then curiosity took over so I drove all the way. It wasn't really that bad finding parking -- I'm sure attitude helped, as I was going in thinking "the parking situation will be ugly, but hey, I can always just decide to bag it" rather than "augh!!! must buy gifts for stupid relatives!! stress! augh!" ;)

I returned my things and got new things. Carter's is sooo dangerous. All the clothing is just so damn cute! Then I returned some stuff at Target and bought a few essentials, including the aforementioned cellphone charger.

When I got home, I looked through the stuff I had bought. It seems to be a rule with me that when I buy baby stuff I always end up with at least one thing that I decide to return for various reasons. This time was no different. One of the sleepers I bought was too light, and plus, when I looked more closely at the design, I realized that it says "Daddy and me"!! D'oh!!! So I'll be returning that one. ;)

Then in the evening I gave Isaac a bath. He loves the bath. The furious kicking of his legs, which he loves to do whenever he's lying down anyway, gains a whole new dimension of fun when water is added. :)

On Sunday, we would have gone over to mom/grandma's place anyway, but we went earlier than we might have, because we had gotten a last-minute call from our friend Cyndi saying that she would be in town from Vermont. I got me and Isaac to mom's in time for a leisurely cup of tea before Cyndi and her partner Laura arrived. We went out for Indian food with them.

It was really great to see them, esp. because the last time I saw Cyndi was on a REALLY bad day with Isaac, when I was just frantic and in tears and basically a mess. So it was nice to show Cyndi that Isaac has gotten better, in terms of being a much more "fun" and less difficult baby, and that I have gotten better in terms of my comfort level with mommying. That was great. :)

Then, after they left, we showered and stuff, and then we went over to another friend's place, Brian, who was throwing a dinner party. Brian is such a great cook you can hardly believe he's heterosexual. ;) He had fourteen people over, and this is the menu he prepared:
  • Carrot soup
  • Acorn squash
  • Braised brussels sprouts with garlic
  • some sort of chicken (can't be more specific since I didn't eat it :) )
  • sweet-potato latkes with homemade applesauce
  • roasted potatoes
  • chocolate-raspberry cake
And he made ALL those things himself, except the applesauce which he and his roommate made. (Private to [livejournal.com profile] metafrantic if you're reading this: Brian's current roommate is Charles. Remember him?)

Anyway, so the food was *fantastic*, and most of the people were people I only knew vaguely, like Brian's friends and their parents, but my mom knew most of them, and they were all very nice. And Isaac was a BIG hit. :) All the moms were passing him around, and I said to Brian's friends, "you guys are in trouble, your parents are gonna want grandkids now," and one of the moms said, "no, we just want Isaac." :D One of them had apparently known that we would be there (she was at Brian's dinner party last year when I was just starting to tell people that I was pregnant) and she brought the cutest little book for Isaac. It's about three little white mice who find some red, yellow, and blue paint and use it to discover how colors mix to make other colors. Too cute! :)

Then we went home and were completely exhausted and collapsed.

Brian, the friend who hosted the dinner party, gave me two hilarious Star Trek-themed baby gifts. One was a Borg teddy bear which is sitting on my desk right now. And the other was a bumper sticker with the Klingon insignia and the words, "My child has more honor than your child." Bwahahahaha!!! :)

Babies! In! Baths! One of the cutest things in life.

Please provide author/title details on the mouse book. It sounds adorable and I'd like to track it down.

Tell Isaac that today is a good day to cry/poop/burp/etc. Just like being Klingon, being a baby is full-time work!

Yeah, as I was bathing Isaac the other day I was like, "next time I MUST remember to bring the camera in at bathtime." The only bathtime pictures I have are from when he was teeny. It'll be much funnier now. :)

The book is "Mouse Paint" by Ellen Stoll Walsh:
