Haven't done one of these in ages! And this one is on a topic of great interest to me.

The Friday Five

1. Is the name you have now the same name that's on your birth certificate? If not, what's changed?

Yes and no. The name I use, Joan, is on my birth certificate, but as my middle name. My given first name is a secret, but it starts with D, and I use "D. Joan" on most official stuff.

2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?

I already did. *g* I experimented with lots of different names before settling on Joan. This was in the fifth grade. I've been Joan for about eighteen years now.

3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)

My mom invented the D name as a variation on the name of a woman she admired. The woman's name was Dolores, but my mom didn't like that name (nor do I; it means "sadness," what a mean thing to name your child!) so she played with the letters and came up with something unique. Alas, its uniqueness was what I hated about it. ;)

I got Joan as my middle name because it's my grandmother's name. Almost everyone in my family has a grandparent's name as a middle name. It's a Jewish thing.

4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?

Lots, for many various reasons. But very few that I hate with a fiery passion or such. There are lots of names that I think are lovely but irrevocably tainted for me because they belong to people I dislike. But it would be mean to give examples so I won't.

5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com accurate? How or how isn't it?

Partly:
The name of Joan` creates a very quiet, practical nature and a clever and inventive mind. true
Being analytical and naturally studious, true
you are interested in a factual understanding of the mysteries of life. not really
Your methodical nature requires that you like to finish what you start without interruptions and also to have everything in its place and properly organized. Bwahaha! Quite false.
An ability to concentrate could take you into computer programming or accountancy or any work requiring concentration and attention to detail. I guess, sorta.
You have, also, a flair for creative expression with your hands. True, if playing piano counts.
You take life seriously and can be easily and deeply hurt and go into moods which can be quite extreme at times, causing much turmoil and unhappiness. Finding it difficult to join in conversation with those with whom you are not well-acquainted, you could feel quite alone and uncommunicative with new acquaintances or in a large crowd. As a result, you could be accused of being unfriendly. all true
You desire so much to be understood, but your name has limited your verbal expression to such an extent that it is very difficult for you to divulge your innermost thoughts even to those closest to you. Very false.
One of your greatest salvations is being out in nature, for it is there that you find the peace and serenity you so much desire. ehh... sometimes true, but I do hate camping. ;)

I also looked up my original first name. Predictably, they didn't have it, but they had something similar (same pronunciation, different spelling) and its analysis was similar to that of Joan: some accurate stuff, some wildly wrong.

well, that was fun. TGIF!

as pointed out by Jerry Seinfeld...

While I agree naming a child "Sadness" is inauspicious, you would have had a name that rhymes with an important part of the female anatomy. Which might have brought it's own luck...

My given first name is a secret, but it starts with D, and I use "D. Joan" on most official stuff.

I've wondered about that. It's got to be something that doesn't fit you at all well, like Doris. Or perhaps Dorothy.

My mom invented the D name as a variation on the name of a woman she admired. The woman's name was Dolores, but my mom didn't like that name (nor do I; it means "sadness," what a mean thing to name your child!) so she played with the letters and came up with something unique. Not Doris or Dorothy, then. An anagram of Dolores?
Doroles? Droleos? Drooles? ;->
