mamajoan: me in hammock (peace)

I'm so not down with all the 9/11-related schmaltz. No offense intended to those on my friend-list who are posting tributes, remembrances*, etc., but I just can't get into it. Yes, it was a horrible tragic day and I remember it with unpleasant clarity. But I don't feel the need to say any more than that; and why today more than any other day? The victims were just as dead yesterday, will be just as dead tomorrow.
* Not "rememberances." Spellcheck much?

But that sounds callous and awful, which just goes to show I was serious when I said I can't get into it. Much more pithy words on the subject, which I entreat you to read on my behalf, were said by [livejournal.com profile] plaidder here and by [livejournal.com profile] ingrid_m here.

Furthermore, if you can, help find Don. I post this here because it exemplifies, to me, the real spirit of Americanism on 9/11/01 and elsewhen: helping out a stranger, simply because s/he needs help.

Meanwhile, I personally celebrate today as Isaac's three-month birthday. :)

In other news, welcome to my friends-list [livejournal.com profile] lightningrose, a friend from college. You may or may not remember [livejournal.com profile] retch, [livejournal.com profile] munoz, and/or [livejournal.com profile] tiggrrl.

I am so with you on this one. I understand that human beings use symbols to filter their traumas and psychological baggage (not in a New Age-y Jungian way, mind you, but in a metaphor-theory-geek-y way), and so it is only natural that 9/11 would become such a thing. Also, it fits into our whole national holiday civil religion thing (cf. Robert Bellah) and how we tend to sacralize our collective traumas (e.g., Memorial Day). But damn, people, can't you just stop it with the schmaltz? Once the pregnant ritual has gone away and the Hallmark Cardianism has triumphed, it's time to pack up and move to Finland.

Given your position on this (with which I heartily agree), you might want to check this out (assuming I did the link right).

Thank you for the welcome!
In answer to your query, I knew [profile] munoz indirectly -- he was friends with my soph rommate and dated another friend -- and the other two I don't recognize from profile alone. But I welcome the chance to catch up with any Obies!
