The Joy of Isaac

mamajoanI wrote this post a couple of days ago when we had been having some difficult days with Isaac. Since then, though, we've had a couple of really good days. He has been sleeping better and going longer between feedings -- up to 3.5 hours! (You know you're in trouble when you get excited about three consecutive hours of sleep!) He's also been much more alert and interactive, looking at things, focusing on faces, responding to people, and so forth.
But anyway, the other day when it had been tough, I thought it would be nice to enumerate some of the positives -- the things about Isaac that are cute, funny, sweet, or otherwise lovable. So I wrote this.
We've had a couple of pretty difficult days with Isaac recently, so I thought it might be nice to enumerate some of the wonderful things about him, to keep me sane.
Right now he's sitting in his bouncy chair, looking around, waving his arms a bit, and chatting. It's very cute. He is a lot more alert lately, looking all around at stuff, having lengthy periods where he's happy to just sit and chatter and look around. He can follow moving things with his eyes now, and turn his head to try to locate a sound. He focuses much better too, actually looking at you when you talk to him.
He has a new noise, which is a sort of yell, but it's not an unhappy yell, it's just sort of a "Hey, I can make noise, cool!" sound.
I still love the eager little noise he makes when he's latching onto the nipple. And generally once he gets hold of the nipple, no matter how frantic or active he was before, he becomes completely serious and focused. He closes his eyes and concentrates completely on the boob. Sometimes his upper leg lifts into the air in a sort of contemplative way.
He also has pretty good neck strength, although not a whole lot of control. When you put him on your shoulder, he'll often lift his head and look all around, and then he loses control of it and it thunks down onto your shoulder (or into your nose if you're unlucky ;) ) and we call him "bobblehead baby." :)
He's also very slowly gaining control of his hands. I think he's slowly starting to figure out that they're attached to him and under his control. Some of his gestures seem more purposeful than they used to, and a lot of times he'll grab onto me (e.g. grabbing my clothing while he's nursing) or grab stuff on the changing table.
Isaac makes a zillion different noises, most of them cute ;) and many of them sounding like laughter even though they're not. I think this is beautifully appropriate since his name means "laughter" or "laughing one." :)
Just now as I was typing this, I had to take a break to go change his diaper, and he smiled at me, in what I'm pretty sure was his first real smile! Yay!
Also, I uploaded a whole bunch of new pictures, including some of me in labor, some of Isaac not long after birth, and then assorted newer ones, all the way up through this past weekend -- some cute pix from Sunday when we put him on the floor naked for a little while. :)
