I'm working on a lengthy post about my fun and eventful weekend, but first, an update on this morning's prenatal checkup.
I met a new midwife today. Apparently due to various insurance budget cuts and so forth, my midwife group had to cut back their hours, so they have partnered with another group to make up the slack. (That's about as well as I understand it so if that makes no sense, sorry.) At first I wasn't so sure about this new chick, but after the first few minutes I decided I really liked her. I think she was nervous at first too; it was her first day in the new (to her) space and with the new (to her) procedures of my group, and I was her first patient of the day. But once she started talking to me, she seemed to go, "okay, this part is the same," and then she relaxed and I relaxed and it was fine.
My blood pressure and chickpea's heart rate continue to be fine. I gained a pound and a half in the last two weeks. The results of my glucose (blood sugar/gestational diabetes) and anemia tests were fine.
The new midwife said that she might have some names of people who teach childbirth classes, but she didn't have them with her so she said she'd try to call me later and leave a message. She also said that she herself teaches a class that runs for one weekend (10-3 on both Sat and Sun) but she's only doing it this coming weekend and then the July 4th weekend. Ugh. I might contemplate trying to do it this weekend if she has any openings, but I don't think I want to give up my holiday weekend. Anyway, we'll see if any of the people whose names she comes up with have better scheduling.
I asked her a few questions that I had written down based on my meeting with the other pregnant chicks last weekend. One biggie was about availability of labor tubs/jacuzzis. Although they can't guarantee that a tub will be available when you need it, they do try to reserve them as soon as you call to say you're in labor, so hopefully even if you don't get one the minute you show up you can get one eventually. Of course, it all depends on when you go into labor and how many other women are laboring at the same time and so forth.
I was also curious about the whole issue of shaving the genital area, since at least one of my books said "some places don't require this any more, ask your provider." The look she gave me when I asked about this! LOL!!! You'd think I had asked her if they were going to use leeches on me! "We don't do that any more," she said, as if the very concept offended her personally. It was funny. :) And also a relief, cuz, um, let's not go there.
Anyway, that was about it. At this point there's not much to do in a checkup except verify that my vitals are okay, verify that baby's heart is still beating, answer any questions I might have, and then send me on my way. Oh, she did tell me what to be watching for in terms of contractions (e.g., when to call), and she lectured me on drinking lots of fluids. Apparently from now on it's extra important to stay hydrated. I'm working on figuring out how to set my computer to remind me every hour to drink some water.
Tonight they have their "meet the midwives" event, where they all introduce themselves and talk about their philosophy of childbirth, and then take you on a tour of the hospital's birthing facility. I'm going to the event with my mom and Jessie, and I think it should be interesting. I feel like I have a lot of questions that might be answered (or clarified) by seeing the space where it's all going to happen. Anyway, we'll see.
