Everyone told me, and they were right. The best thing about having two kids is seeing the way they look at each other.

Since I whined here about how nervous I was about my first day as a SAHM, I should update on it, at least to say "so far so good." Friday went fine. The weekend went fine too, albeit I had help. Ditto today. After today, we have two days in a row "on our own" and then Thursday is mom's day off, which she usually spends with Isaac, but we've discussed possibly all going to the ocean that day depending on weather. Thursday is also the day our new clothes dryer is supposed to be delivered (YAY) so hopefully we'll fit it all in somehow.

Today I bought food with WIC for the first time. The neat thing about it is that the cashier writes on the WIC check the total amount that your stuff cost, so you get to see exactly how much you've saved. So today I got $20.43 worth of free food courtesy of the government. So, uh, thanks for paying your taxes, everyone.

Meanwhile I still have made no progress on applying for food stamps. And I still don't know how much unemployment I'll be getting, or when. But I am diligently keeping my records of job applications that I'm submitting, in case they're going to actually ask for it (supposedly they require you to make three "contacts" per week, but I've heard varying things about how closely they actually monitor this). There are actually a fair number of tech-writer job postings on the various job sites, so I'm getting some resumes out.

Ruthie has gotten quite good at reaching out and grabbing toys -- as opposed to waiting for them to come into her hands -- and getting them into her mouth. She's definitely at that stage where you have to be careful where you hold her, because she'll grab anything within reach (including, this morning, Isaac's hair -- prompting a mini-hysteria fit from him). It's nice though because she can spend a good 10 minutes entertaining herself by just playing with a toy, chewing on it, drooling all over it, "talking" to it, and so forth. She's also trying to figure out how to sit up on her own, which will be a big milestone in terms of her ability to self-amuse.

Also, Ruthie has discovered the two bizarre and fascinating items on the ends of her legs. She isn't at all sure what the heck they are, but yesterday she nearly managed to get one of them into her mouth. :)

Meanwhile Isaac has gotten very good at looking through the set of refrigerator magnets or the alphabet blocks, picking out the correct letters, and lining them up to spell his name. (We got a second A block from my mom.) He's also getting pretty good at spelling his uncle [livejournal.com profile] metafrantic's name. And he's working on learning the difference between left and right, and the days of the week -- he already knows that after Sunday comes Monday, after Monday comes Tuesday, after Tuesday comes Wednesday, and Wednesday is garbage day. :)

I have sooooooo much more to post about, but this will have to do for today's limited window of opportunity. The only reason I manage to post now is that mom took Isaac out for a walk and Ruthie is taking a little nap. Oops, make that WAS taking a little nap. Gotta run.
