The plot thickens even more!
Feb. 14th, 2005 12:28 pmThe tax picture gets even more complicated. Now it's starting to sound like, all this time when I've been paying real-estate taxes as part of my mortgage, I've been paying the taxes for our entire house, rather than just my condo unit! Yikes!
After my co-homeowner emailed me saying that he's confused because he hasn't paid any real-estate taxes but they've gotten paid anyway, I called around a bit. The city tax assessor said they can't tell me how much tax was paid on the building for 2004, but they could tell me what the tax bill was for Feb 2005, and it was the same amount that got paid out of my mortgage. My mortgage company confirmed the amount, and said they'll have to investigate and talk to the city assessor and figure out what the heck is going on.
I don't know what this is going to mean as far as whether I'll still be able to take a tax deduction for the whole amount -- I'm guessing that I will be able to, for this past year, since I did pay it. But more exciting to me is the idea that if they really do reduce the taxes I'm paying by half, it might mean my monthly mortgage bill will go down. That would be AWESOME.
Anyway, further updates as events warrant.
