On a typical day, it takes me about 30-35 minutes to get to work. I usually leave the house around 9:30 and get to work around 10. The daycare center that I chose for Isaac is also about 30-35 minutes from home (and about 5-10 minutes from the office).

This morning, being Isaac's first day at daycare, I had told them that we would be there at 8:00, figuring that would give me at least a solid hour and a half to hang out and assist with the adjustment process but still get to work by 10. I meant to leave at 7:30, but of course since I'm bad at mornings (and also because I found myself physically incapable of getting out of bed at 6:30), I actually ended up leaving at 7:45. Still, fifteen minutes late isn't bad, and I was hopeful that I would be able to get there by 8:30.

I pulled into the daycare parking lot at 10:25.

What, you may ask, was I doing between 7:45 and 10:25? I'll tell ya: I was driving. Yes. That whole time.

Yeah. Let's not do that again, like, EVER, okay?

So I spent about two hours at daycare, and got to work around 12:30, exhausted and weak from hunger (I had only had a little bit of breakfast since I usually eat more once I get to the office). I'm comforted in retrospect by the knowledge that it was that way all over the Boston area. (Many of my coworkers had equally bad commutes, and some of them were lucky enough to hear the traffic reports before they left home, so they stayed home. And it was front-page news on boston.com that ALL the major roads were horribly snarled.) However, at the time I was in the traffic, I wasn't very comforted. All I could think about was what a horrible incompetent mother I am who can't even get her kid to daycare on time for his very first damn day. Sigh.

In happier news, though, I just called DC and they said Isaac is doing great. He took a 3.5-ounce bottle (!!! -- that's 3.5 ounces more than he has taken from any of his various babysitters!), then had a 15-minute nap (*roll eyes*) but now has been asleep for about 40 minutes. The DC teacher said that "when he's not in our arms, his favorite place to be is the exersaucer" which I find reassuring in that she recognizes that he prefers to be in arms, and that she's already starting to figure out his preferences in general. (An exersaucer is a contraption where the baby can stand up, but be supported, and be surrounded by a tray with various toys on it -- I don't describe it very well, click here for example.)

Anyway, so I'm very heartened to hear that he's doing so well. I do have a good feeling about the daycare center in general. The teachers seem very nice and they really seem to love the babies. So I'm feeling pretty optimistic, knock on wood...!

But still scarred by the Commute From Hell. Eurgh. *shudder*
