quick summaries
Sep. 10th, 2002 11:15 amI decided to quit waiting around till I finish my epic Worldcon report, and give y'all the quick rundown on at least the early and late parts.
Wednesday
The whole travel thing went pretty uneventfully, thanks to my mom who decided at the last moment that she would after all drive me to the airport. Yay! No having to contend with public transportation or shell out for a taxi! I lost a whole $1.75 on slot machines in the Las Vegas airport during my layover. I got to San Jose and to the hotel before Laura and Ariana, probably around 1:30 or 2pm local time. I was exhausted and tried to nap but couldn't, on account of being all excited. Soon enough, they showed up, and we wandered around and got food, and then
tiggrrl showed up, and we got more food, and then we basically hung out. We were TIRED.
Oh, and the hotel gave us a room with one bed despite there being three of us in the room. The hotel chick swore that three could sleep in that bed. Yeah, they could, assuming that a) at least two of them were Calista Flockhart and b) they were deeply, madly in love. But Ariana said it offended her sensibilities to shell out another $25/night for a cot, so she slept on the floor. And
tiggrrl got the loveseat for that one night.
Thursday
tiggrrl had to get up early to get her train back home so she could, like, get handfasted and stuff. ;) We didn't have trouble getting up early because by our body clocks it was fairly late morning. We got food and tried to get our convention program booklets but they were out. They swore they'd have more later. (They didn't.) We checked out con stuff, not all of which was open yet, and we tried the hotel pool, which despite all claims was NOT heated (brr). We found a great little gourmet-grocery store two blocks away and bought way too much food. Later we went back to the con center and they did have booklets.
Friday
We went to a panel about the Sci-Fi Channel's upcoming programming. I'll probably write that stuff up in another post (and no, they didn't say ANYTHING about cancelling Farscape! Wah!). We went to some other panels, I got Connie Willis to sign my copy of To Say Nothing of the Dog (she was VERY nice!), and we went to see Monsters Inc. which they were showing because they show all the nominees for the "Best Dramatic Presentation" Hugo award. And Laura and Ariana hadn't seen it, to my shock and dismay, so I insisted that we watch it.
Then we decided to skip the Patrick Stewart talk because we were sure it would be crowded and we wouldn't be able to get seats. We later learned that this wasn't true. :( We went for Indian food and then went back to the hotel and did a little desultory party-hopping.
I'll do Saturday and Sunday in another post.
Monday
Ariana had already left. Laura's flight was earlier than mine so I got up when she did, and saw her off. Then I finished packing, got some breakfast from the Con Suite, and got a taxi to the airport. Stupidly, I had thought my flight was at 11am, but really it was at 11:50, so I was there WAY early and had to hang around being bored and tired. Ah well. Then I flew home, and my sainted mom picked me up at the airport.
BTW, America West is bipolar when it comes to feeding passengers. On my trip out, on a 5-hour flight (Boston to Vegas) leaving at 8am, they didn't feed us at all. On the return trip, on a 5-hour flight (Phoenix to Boston) leaving at 2pm, they did feed us. And their vegetarian meal was the best I have EVER had on a plane! I swear. It was a little whadyacallit, skewer -- shishkabob -- with different colored peppers (red, yellow, green) alternating with tofu. Tofu!! On an airplane!! And rice, and a little salad, and crackers and cookies. I could not believe it. I may write them a letter of praise.
Anyway, stay tuned for the rest of my report.
