quoniam tu solus sanctus
Feb. 26th, 2003 02:45 pmDammit, why are my inboxes so quiet today?? Where is everyone? *pout* Need email!
Last night's chorus rehearsal was a little weird because of timing. Normally we have two rehearsals in February, then none in March (because our conductor takes his private-high-school student orchestra on tour), then regular once-a-week rehearsals throughout April and May. But last week's rehearsal was canceled due to blizzard, so instead we're having one in February, then nothing for five weeks. So it feels a little weird.
Still, it was fun; it always is. We're doing Schubert's Mass #2, and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. They're not terribly difficult pieces, but they're new and there's a lot of stuff and not much time. So I have to say I'm pretty skeptical about our ability to pull it off, but then, I said that last year about the Misa Tango, and that actually came off quite well.
Our conductor has it in his head that we'll actually *pause, close eyes, deep sigh* STAGE the Purcell, with, like, sets and costumes and scenery and acting and *pause, close eyes, deep sigh* choreography. And once he gets such an idea in his head, nothing will sway him. No matter how often you remind him that this is a community choir, that half these people can't even remember to look up from their music to watch him during concerts -- and now you want them to *move* while singing? In any sort of coordinated fashion? Sigh.
But it's going to happen, so we had best just deal. And it will probably be fun, if nothing else. The Purcell -- at least some the choral bits -- is enough like some of the Gilbert & Sullivan that
tiggrrl and I did in college that I think it could turn out to be entertaining. The Schubert is closer to my preferred, and better-known, style of choral singing, although it's a little slow and a little, I dunno, simplistic for my tastes; but it should be easy to learn thanks to that, and I think we'll pull it off.
It was interesting singing and being kicked from the inside. :) Chickpea was reasonably quiet most of the time, but he did wiggle around a bit a couple of times and distract me. I also definitely have poorer lung capacity, which means I have to pause for breath more often, and of course that will only get worse, but *shrug* what can you do? We've had chorus members before who sang in rehearsals and concerts through their seventh and eighth months of pregnancy, so I know it can be done. I'll be at 32 weeks on concert day. Well, we'll just see how that goes, I guess.
After rehearsal, a core group of us always goes out to dinner. Last night everyone wanted to go to this Mexican place, and as you know if you read my "what will I never eat" meme the other day, I don't much care for Mexican due to all my dietary restrictions. But my mom promised me I would be able to find enough to eat, so I decided to give it a try.
It was a fairly upscale, pricey place, but mom had a coupon so that was okay. It was very nice in terms of decor and the waitstaff were great. They made the guacamole right at your table, which I thought was super-cool. I ended up ordering two appetizers plus an entree, which was really too much, plus the appetizers were ehh and the entree was just a *little* too spicy for me. But I ate enough anyway (plus *lots* of guacamole) and then had dessert. ;) Everyone teased me as I was devouring the dessert. What, they never saw a pregnant chick eat before? ;) It's true that usually at these gatherings the people who order dessert will pass it around the table for others to taste, but I didn't do that last night, because dammit, I wanted to eat the whole thing! Which I did, so there! :)
But anyway, so now it's not till April that we'll be rehearsing again. It's a little weird. In the interim I have to spend some time listening to the music and getting familiar with it. I learn music pretty easily, so it shouldn't be a problem.
