a catch-all
Feb. 2nd, 2003 09:44 pmI should have updated yesterday but I didn't get to it. I don't really have anything to say about the Columbia that hasn't already been said, so I won't really bother. I particularly think
jennyo said some insightful things about why it hurts us so much to see a space shuttle blow up, more so than just an "ordinary" disaster that kills seven random people. But that's all I'll say about that.
My Saturday was much more eventful than expected, at least based on my answer to the Friday Five "what are you doing this weekend" question. I slept till about noon (and if you don't think that counts as eventful, *you* try being pregnant and sleep-deprived sometime), then got up and checked my email and found out about Columbia. I spent some time watching CNN and crying, then snapped out of it, took my shower and got my ass over to
anotherjen's clothing swap with a whole hour to spare. ;) It was weird at first because I didn't know anyone and people were taking off their clothes right there in the rooms, but eventually someone I did know slightly showed up, and I found
anotherjen, or more accurately she found me, and then it was all cool. I got some good stuff too, a couple of dresses and some pants and uh, I forget what-all else.
Then I stuck around for a little while afterward helping to bag up the leftover clothes for shelters, and then I thought I might pass out from hunger (this is a fairly new development, but that's another post) so I left. I went over to my mom's and had some food. Watched some more shuttle coverage with mom since she hadn't seen any of it yet. Eventually her friend came over for their dinner date, and they invited me along, and we ended up having Tibetan food, which was interesting, me never having had it before. We also had some interesting conversation about politics and, of course, pregnancy.
Then I had to drive home on very slippery slushy roads, as it was precipitating, what they call "wintry mix," too wet to be snow but too solid to be rain. It was icky. I hate driving on slippery roads. :P
Today was much more relaxed. They declared a "snow emergency," which basically just means "we're gonna tow all the cars that would otherwise be legally parked along the street." I park in a driveway behind the house so I didn't have to worry. I basically sat around all day watching TV. I made a small amount of progress on my backlog -- two Smallvilles, one Farscape, and one Angel down; two Farscapes and two Angels and one West Wing to go. Hey, it's progress. I also did a preliminary run-through of my federal tax return and came out owing the gov't a lot of money. Augh! I'm telling myself my math was wrong or I forgot to factor something in. I think I'm going to swim the river in Egypt for a while before I look at that again. Sigh.
I also took some new pictures of my belly, but you don't get to see 'em. Nyah.
