Things that make me go "yay":

* I got back my deposit from the Japan trip. It's "only" $150, which seems like a drop in the bucket compared to how much I actually spent on the trip, but OTOH, who's sneering at another $150 in her bank account? Pas moi.

* After three phone calls and one web-form submission, I think I have finally convinced Northwest Airlines to credit my frequent-flyer account with miles for ALL the legs of the Japan/Hawaii trip. (Bizarrely, at first they credited me for Boston-to-Detroit and Tokyo-to-Honolulu but not for Detroit-to-Tokyo. Which of course was the longest leg of the trip.)

* Even more yay-worthy, if they really do credit me properly for the entire trip, I *think* I'll have enough miles for a free flight!

* I got my tickets for the Bobs concert! woohoo!

Things that make me go "wah":

* I won't be able to use the aforementioned miles for Worldcon because it's in Toronto and you need more miles to go international. Drat. (I shall, however, consider using some of them to upgrade to first class...!)

* I slept way late this morning. Could it be, because I stayed up way too late last night? And what exactly was I thinking? It's probably because I got too much sleep the night before. (I can't wait for when I have a baby and look back on this post and wonder what ever made me think there was such a thing as "too much sleep.") On the bright side, though, I managed to haul my ass up and still get to work only ten minutes late.

* I didn't even get around to watching "West Wing" last night. I spent too much time fighting with mom's computer. (Anyone know why a new flat-screen iMac would constantly drop the Internet connection?) I didn't exactly fix it, although I did make the problem stop happening by switching the modem setting from v90 to v33, but that's a bad solution because it means it won't connect at top speeds. Dammit. Anyway, I brought the WW tape home, so it's just another thing on my ever-growing list of things to watch ... sigh. I really gotta give up a show or three.

Thing that makes me unsure whether to go "yay" or "wah": My mom wants to stay over an extra day in NYC when we go down for the peace rally on Feb. 15th (Saturday). She thinks we should drive to New Haven Friday night, stay with family, then drive into the city on Saturday for the rally, then stay Saturday night with friends in the city and do stuff in the city on Sunday. On the one hand, it would be fun and it seems like a waste to go all the way to NYC and not do some stuff (hell, it seems like a waste that we live so close and go there so rarely), but on the other hand, I keep feeling like I have a lot to do and should be using my weekends to do it. But I never actually do. Anyway, I have two weekends between now and then, so maybe I can accomplish some stuff on those. Maybe.

Thing that makes me laugh derisively and go "yeesh, what a whiner": David E. Kelley bitching about ABC moving "The Practice" to Monday nights. Yeah, my heart bleeds for ya, guy who created at least four of the most popular shows in TV history. Yeah, you get no love, you get no respect. Riiiight. Talk to the hand.

West Wing wasn't on last night, if that helps.

Yeah, I know. My bad -- talking about something I mentioned in a previous post without referent. I'm actually talking about the "West Wing" from two weeks ago, and it's a damn good thing there hasn't been a new ep the last two Wednesdays, because then I'd be behind by three WW eps, along with my three Angels, two Farscapes, and two Smallvilles. Sigh.

Ah.

Well, be warned - have tissues at the ready. I cried through a good portion of that ep.

Thanks for the warning. I suspected that might be the case from reading the TV Guide summary of the ep. :(

Hey, The Roommate and I will also be at the rally on Feb. 15! We should meet for coffee before or after.

Hunt down and enter a less agressive init string for the modem.

Since dropping from v.90 to v.33 made the problem go away, it mean the phone line can't deal with the data rate the modem is demanding.

You many get a more stable connection, while sacrificing less speed, with a different init -- changing the modem's line of attack from "I won't speak to you if you don't give me 48k!" to something along the lines of "Um, can we compromise at 39?"

Worth a try any way.
