Went to that concert today with mom. The Handel & Haydn Society did three Mozart symphonies. Yay!

The first symphony (#35 Haffner) was a bit shaky. The balance was way off between the brass and the strings -- the brass much too loud, drowning out the strings, causing a muddy sort of sound. It didn't really come together till the final movement, which was really good.

The second (#40) was better but still a bit shaky. Also, one of the horn players really messed up at one point. :P They had a better sound by that point though, maybe just because the 40th is better known, or who knows why.

But the Jupiter (#41) was fantastic, worth the whole thing! They really had their stuff together by that point (after the intermission) and it just sang. The final movement is just so exciting, and they played it at a nice brisk tempo and took all the repeats. Whew! I felt like I needed a cigarette afterward. :-)

The program for next year shows that they're doing Beethoven's 9th ... on my mom's 60th birthday. I guess I know what I'll be doing that day. :-)
