(BTW, I notice that I really need a pregnancy-related icon. Anyone out there with more creativity than me want to give it a shot? *makes puppy-dog eyes* Pweeze?)

So I got a new CD of Anne-Sophie Mutter playing the Four Seasons, which is all very well and good, but when I go to put it in the drive, I notice that the cover of the CD has a picture of Ms. Mutter sitting on the floor wearing a black tank and jeans, in what I can only describe as a "slutty rock-star CD-cover pose." Also, inside the case, when you take the CD out, the space underneath it has a photo of her in white T-shirt and jeans, cavorting with six black-clad men (well, the one on the right *might* be a chick but I'm pretty sure not). I can only assume that they are members of the orchestra. Then, inside the booklet with the liner notes, there are a bunch of other arty pix of her in come-hither type poses.

So my thing is, okay, is this a pop-music CD or classical, for gosh sakes? I mean, did I accidentally buy the latest Christina Aguilera or some damn thing? Am I just getting old and crotchety, or is it reasonable to still expect a measure of frellin' dignity from my classical musicians? I mean, it's not like you're going to fool any unsuspecting teenager into accidentally buying a classical CD just because the cover has a hip young chick, so really, what's the point? I'm sayin'.

Eh, it's probably the crotchety thing. Ah well. It's still a good recording, and that's what counts.

ASM is fairly infamous for that, I think. But the shift into a new generation of arty-sexy-young-looking-type classical musicians is an overall one; and something that a lot of, hmm, old-guard or old-guard-identifying people are kind of tetchy about. I mean, read Strings magazine....

Hilary Hahn, man, though. Now there's a chick with dignity, incredible natural loveliness, and heaps of virtuoso skill. mm.

heya LRS, oh ye of the many names! :)

lol, actually read a classical-music-related magazine? What am I, made of free time? ;) Nah. I know it's kind of a trend these days, it's just that I've managed to avoid really noticing it because I mostly buy the old guard. Not that I avoid younger performers on principle or anything, but if I have a choice between Glenn Gould and some young chippie/chickie I've never heard of, I'm goin' with Glenn, ya know?
