wankery, or lack thereof
Jan. 15th, 2003 01:24 pmMany people on my friends-list have commented on the death of fandom_wank, and their comments all seem to be the same basic thing: "I have mixed feelings about it." After which they go on to say -- grossly generalizing and summarizing here -- that although fandom_wank mostly just annoyed them or pissed them off, they don't like censorship either.
I feel essentially the same way. I bitched here in my journal about how much I disliked fandom_wank and its ilk, but at the same time, I believe in free speech so I wasn't advocating for shutting it down or anything. I was mostly just explaining why I had decided to stop reading the community.
I don't think the death of that particular community marks the death of that type of criticism/wankery, as some have speculated (hoped?). I think
jennyo said it best in her post on the topic, wherein she said (again, paraphrasing wildly) that the main problem was people using f_w to air their own personal peeves/grievances in a "look how clever I am with my wittily phrased insults" sort of way. Also, as she points out, sometimes your opinion/position on an issue is simply wrong, and people pointing out same are not "out to get you," they're just telling it like it is, and you should suck it the hell up. I think that analyzing one's own opinion, deciding that it's wrong, and changing it is a lost art these days, or at least fast disappearing. We're so scared these days of admitting our own errors; we think that changing our minds is a sign of weakness. And that makes it really hard to have a rational, intelligent discussion about, like, anything.
But in any case, I expect that some sort of forum will soon pop up to replace fandom_wank, whether it's here on LJ or somewhere else. Wankery doesn't go away just because you cancel its journal. ;)
In other "what my friends list is saying" news, apparently almost everyone thought last night's Smallville episode sucked. I didn't see it yet; it's TiVo'd for my viewing pleasure later. I watched last week's Buffy episode instead, so now I am *finally* caught up on Buffy, for good or ill. Whee.
