surreality
Nov. 20th, 2002 11:30 amThis morning when I got into my car to drive to work it was sunny and the sky was blue. All was pretty.
Then I got about halfway to work, and was coming down a long hill on a major road, and suddenly ahead of me at the bottom of the hill, it was all cloudy and dark and everything looked fuzzy. It was fog. Driving into it was like driving off Earth and onto another planet. It was bizarre.
The rest of my drive involves a bunch of small or medium hills, and as I crested each one, the next bit of road ahead and below was even foggier than the previous. By the time I went through the rotary and got onto the last stretch, the fog was actually surrounding the car and making everything look hazy. On the hillside where cows are often grazing, one could see murky, dark, vaguely bovine shapes: Cows In The Mist.
And then about a mile before the turnoff, the clouds started to part, the sun started to poke through, and I was back on Earth again. Now I've been at work an hour and it's bright and sunny and blue-sky here as well.
Definitely one of the weirdest commutes I've ever had.
