halloween eek
Oct. 30th, 2002 07:08 pmI don't dress up for Halloween usually. Not that I'm opposed to the concept or anything; it's just that I lack the imagination to come up with a good costume idea and the skill to create it. In an ideal world I should have a friend with mad costuming skillz who wanted a convenient mannequin, so to speak. Alas.
But anyway, Melissa's coming over tomorrow to help me pass out candy since she gets no kiddies in her area; and then I thought 'what the hell' so I invited another friend over too, and suddenly I realized that this means I need to get my apartment into something resembling presentable condition. Oy. I guess I know what I'll be doing tonight. Sigh, why do these things not occur to me till the last minute?
Also, my second friend said he's going to come in costume, so suddenly I found myself going "Oh crap, I need a costume!" Just like I do every year; you'd think I would learn. :P I suppose I can just throw on one of the outfits I wear at Worldcons and call it a costume. It seems pretty lame though. Oh well, that's what I get for procrastinating.
I'm remembering Halloween in ... let's see, it must have been '99 because I was living in Atlanta with
xochiquetzl ... yes, in '99, when two kids rang the bell and I opened the door and said "so, who are you supposed to be?" and one kid said, "um, we're characters from this TV show," and I looked again and realized they were Kyle and Cartman, so I went, "Oh! South Park!" And then I felt doubly lame, because a) I hadn't recognized the costumes right off and b) they obviously thought I was some incredibly old geezer who wouldn't know South Park if it bit her on the wizened yellow ass, hence why they just said "a TV show." Man, did I feel old. And lame. (Here's a picture from that Halloween of
xochiquetzl as Morticia Addams and me as an unfortunate victim.)
I mean, basically I've found that I enjoy handing out candy to kids and seeing everyone else's costume more than dressing up. I was finding this to be true even as a teenager, and now that I can just as easily buy my own candy ;) it's even more true. Plus, I remember when I used to go trick-or-treating and how some people would give types of candy that I thought were lame, so now that I'm giving it out, I make sure to buy the stuff that I wanted when I was a kid, in hopes of making the kids think I'm cool. ;) Wow, the grammar in that sentence sucked. Please to ignore.
Pointless rambling post ends now.
