Finally got around to buying a curtain rod and curtains for my cubicle at work! Of course it won't be till Monday that I find out whether they fit, or whether the color works, etc. I went with a plain cream/beige color. They have such a huge assortment of patterns, but they're all so ugly (I hate floral) so I decided to just go with solid colors, both in my apartment and in my cube.

In family news, my mom is going to Cuba; my brother and his longtime girlfriend got handfasted (Mom reports this as "that pagan thing, hand-whatever, what do you call it again?"); my great-uncle is having major heart surgery, and my uncle is STILL mad at my brother for blowing us off to hang out with his friends during his college graduation. Which was, what, a year and a half ago? Yeesh.

I took a zillion pictures with my new digital camera, but it takes forever to transfer them to the computer over serial connection, so they're not up yet.

The other day during our company CEO's big "goals for 2002" pep talk, I was so not wanting to be there. I found myself fantasizing about meeting a rich man who would subsidize my existence for a year or two. Just so I could go in to my boss's office and say, "I quit, and I don't have a new job!" Then I thought, there must be some way to work that into a story. So I'm thinking about that...

How does she get to go to Cuba? I thought travel there from the U.S. was illegal. I wanna go and see where my family used to live and stuff!

It is illegal to go to Cuba from the U.S., but that doesn't mean it's impossible. (Hey, it's illegal to buy drugs too, does that mean it can't be done? ;) ) You can do it if you fly through another country -- typically Canada or Mexico -- which is what my mom did back in november '00. It's still not entirely legal, but if you know someone who knows how to set it up, you can do it (I'll send you a phone number).

There are a few exceptions, though, to the rule that 'you can't legally go to Cuba from the US.' You can legally go to Cuba if, for example, you're with an arts group (like a musical or acting troupe), or if you're going for a conference, or for certain school trips, and so forth. The trip my mom's about to take is for a conference of people who are trying to set up sister-city relationships between Cuban cities and American cities. It's government-sanctioned, so it's legal. But you wouldn't believe the hoops that had to be jumped through before it could happen...
