Isaac's Big Week
Jul. 24th, 2009 03:07 pm(Thanks for all the thoughtful comments on my post about bras, furry legs, and society. I'll probably be doing a follow-up post at some point.)
Isaac has had an eventful week or two!
Sometime last-week-ish, he started complaining that it hurt to eat. Turns out this was because he had his first loose tooth. There ensued several days of trying to figure out how he could still eat his favorite things (involved me cutting some things into small pieces that normally you wouldn't for a kid as old as he is). I was fairly trepidatious about the whole thing, since I'm pretty squeamish about loose teeth. I didn't want him to show it to me, and I was not sanguine about how things would go when it fell out. I suggested that he could pull it out with his fingers if he wanted to -- *I* would never do this, but thought I'd offer him the option because I know some kids like to do it -- you should have seen the look he gave me, LOL. You would have thought I'd suggested he chop off his foot with a saw. LOL. I guess he takes after me on this one. ;)
Then last weekend, at our summer cottage, he got a splinter in his finger. My mom and I tried to poke it out. Much crying and hysteria ensued. The splinter is still in his finger. ;) Splinters are another thing about which I'm very squeamish, so it was a tough couple of days for ME too. heh. ;)
This past Wednesday, at summer camp, Isaac took a baseball bat to the nose from one of the other kids (not deliberately -- the kid just wasn't paying attention). Apparently, there were copious quantities of blood. My mom picked Isaac up that day, and they told her about the incident, but she forgot to mention it to me, so I didn't hear about it until later. I did think his nose looked a little different, but didn't think much of it, until bedtime when Isaac told me out of the blue not to touch his nose because "it still hurts." I asked why, and he goes, "Remember, because Kevin hit me with the bat?" Me: "Kevin WHAT you with the WHAT?" LOL. Anyway, the nose seems fine. It was kind of swollen that first day but now just looks slightly bruised.
Yesterday, we expanded Isaac's bed. He has an IKEA bed that can expand in a pretty ingenious way - I don't know how to describe it - it has three settings, short (where the ends are turned up), medium (where one end is up and one down), and long (where both ends are down). It had been on the "short" setting but he's gotten much too big for that. So we switched it to "medium." It sure looks different and changes the whole "feel" of the bedroom. Also, it's a squeeze in there. The kids' bedroom is pretty small. When we expand the bed all the way -- and/or expand Ruthie's (she has an identical bed) -- it might get ugly. eek.
Then this morning, Isaac's loose tooth came out! He was eating breakfast and it just came out when he took a bite. Luckily, he didn't swallow it. Also luckily, it didn't hurt and he didn't freak out. About the process of retrieving the tooth from his mouth, the less said the better ;) but anyway, the tooth was rescued and tonight we'll be doing the Tooth Fairy thing (guess I better make a trip to the ATM! yikes). And now I have to get used to what he looks like with a big ol' gap in his face. I shall try to get some pictures tonight.
Tomorrow morning, Isaac leaves for a weekend trip up to Maine with grandma -- his birthday present, somewhat belatedly. They're taking the Amtrak DownEaster to Maine, staying with a cousin, going to a folk-music festival in which the cousin is performing, and then they'll take the DownEaster back home on Sunday. I have noooooooo idea what Ruthie and I will be doing in the meantime, heh.
And then on Tuesday I'm taking Isaac for his 6-year checkup. There will probably be shots, so there will probably be crying. I'm not looking forward to that. alas.
So that's the nutshell version of Isaac's eventful week or two. No wonder he's so tired lately! lol.

Date: 2009-07-27 07:06 pm (UTC)Sounds to me like you're in for a growth spurt!
Don't be surprised if it seems that Isaac has suddenly grown two inches (or more) "overnight". Kids sleep more when experiencing growth spurts as they need that energy for the growing!
:D
