mamajoan: me in hammock (us being wacky mar 2011)
Before iPod playlists there were mix CDs, and before mix CDs there were mix tapes, but kids these days don't know what cassettes are, and that's probably just as well. ;) Modern technology makes it easier than ever to put together a compilation of songs that you like, that go together nicely. And in true late-bloomer fashion, I'm finally discovering (and introducing my kids to) the art of playlist creation, only about two decades late.

We've had a "favorite songs" playlist for a while now, and I keep burning new CDs of it to keep in the car, adding or removing or rearranging the songs. But now we're getting tired of most of the songs on there, and the kids have a few new favorites -- mostly from the Open Air Circus, whose theme this year was "haunted" so they had a lot of creepy/dark/macabre songs -- so we're working on a whole new playlist.

Thus far we've got the new faves -- "Hell" by Squirrel Nut Zippers (cheery and upbeat, but with a we're-all-doomed message), "Demons" by Imagine Dragons (really angsty), "Little Ghost" by the White Stripes (an upbeat song about being in love with a ghost), and "Bad Blood" by Bastille -- not necessarily in that order though -- and I added in "Another One Bites The Dust" because it's so deliciously angry, with that sinister beat. Then we all agreed that the ending of "Another One Bites The Dust" makes a good funny segue into "Everything Is Awesome" from the Lego Movie :) and that transitions nicely into "I Love It" by Icona Pop, which is basically a fuck-you breakup song, and from there we go into Pharrell's "Happy" which somehow, inexplicably, the kids are still not sick of yet.

Then Isaac decided he wanted to add LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" so I decided that should go together with "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred, which I think is still as hilarious as it was when I was an adolescent. ;) But we can't figure out where to fit those two into our mix. And we can't agree on the order of the hellish/demony/creepy songs. And we keep thinking of more songs we like, of course....

I'll miss our old "favorite songs" mix somewhat, though. I'm sure we'll get back to it eventually. I was particularly proud of the way I put together Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" with "Some Nights" by Fun. :)
